NCAA Division II Vikings Knock Out Titans

Augustana College (S.D.) captured all but one set on its way to a 9-0 women's tennis decision over UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (March 23) in Orlando, Fla.

The Vikings (11-2) won five singles matches in straight sets, along with 8-4 victories in each doubles competition. Jessica Spalding was flawless in recording a 6-0, 6-0 win over Andrea Larson (Fr. • Hartland) in the fifth singles flight. At #1 singles, Kathryn Jesperson notched a quick 6-0, 6-1 triumph against Emily Bostwick (Jr. • Whitefish Bay).

Hannah Gebauer and Michelle Wadas teamed up to defeat Bostwick and Lauren Piotrowski (Fr. • Greendale) in the top doubles match. At #2, Jesperson and Spalding prevailed over Valerie Langkau (Fr. • Oshkosh) and Brianna Theobald (Fr. • Manitowoc). The final team event went to Emily Johnson and Gabrielle Kachena, who earned the win against Megan Etten (Fr. • Howard) and Megan Saari (Fr. • Oshkosh).

The Titans' (7-6) best chance came from Theobald at #2 singles. She forced a tiebreaker vs. Wadas before coming up on the short end of a 6-4, 1-6 (10-8) score. A pair of other singles matches ended with 6-2, 6-2 counts, as #4 Johnson topped Langkau and #6 Liz Lewis defeated Haley Ott (So. • Marshfield).

Gebauer tallied a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Piotrowski in the third singles flight to round out the results.

UW-Oshkosh's next challenge comes on Thursday as it clashes with Hope College (Mich.) in Orlando.
