Titans Take Third Place At WIAC Team Tournament

Valerie Langkau (Fr. • Oshkosh) and Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) each won a tiebreaker as UW-Oshkosh split a pair of matches to take third place at the WIAC Women's Tennis Tournament on Friday (April 29) in Whitewater.

The Titans got swept in doubles action as they dropped their opening decision to UW-Whitewater, 5-0. In the third-place match, UW-Oshkosh captured 3-of-4 singles wins to defeat UW-Eau Claire by a 5-2 tally.

Tornow pulled out a 6-4, 6-7 (4) (10-8) victory over the Blugolds' Mary Frassetto at No. 4 singles. The sixth flight also required extra time, with Langkau squeaking by Karlie Day, 4-6, 6-2 (11-9). Tornow later teamed up with Lauren Piotrowski (Fr. • Greendale) for a No. 1 doubles triumph of 8-4 over Frassetto and Gretchen Bachmeier.

UW-Oshkosh compiled two other successful rounds, including Piotrowski's 7-5, 6-4 win over Stephanie Wolf at No. 3 singles. Emily Bostwick (Jr. • Whitefish Bay) and Megan Etten (Fr. • Howard) then combined to book an 8-3 decision against Wolf and Emily Hiebl.

For the Blugolds, Lexi DeMario topped Etten by a 6-2, 6-1 score. DeMario also prevailed in doubles with Karlie Day, as they marked an 8-3 victory over Langkau and Brianna Theobald (Fr. • Manitowoc).

UW-Whitewater, which earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, took five convincing decisions from the Titans. In the first flight, Kalla Schaefer got by Bostwick, 6-0, 6-1. The other individual win was a 6-0, 6-0 performance by Sydney Divelbiss over Etten.

All three doubles contests went to the Warhawks, with Amy Siemon and Lauren Aquilar notching an 8-0 triumph over Langkau and Theobald at No. 3. UW-Whitewater then closed out the meeting with 8-1 wins by Schaefer and Alexandra Bayliss over Piotrowski and Tornow and Divelbiss and Abby Martin over Bostwick and Etten.
