Titans Sink Vikings In Home Opener

Lauren Piotrowski (Fr. • Greendale) and Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) each won a singles match while teaming up for a dual victory as UW-Oshkosh posted a 6-3 win over the Lawrence University women's tennis team on Thursday (Sept. 9) at Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans (1-0) captured their first dual meet of the season, which features their opening seven matches at home. It was the only setback this year for Lawrence University (4-1).

Piotrowski tallied a win at No. 5 singles by defeating Katherine Valde 6-4, 4-6 (10-8). In the sixth flight, Tornow prevailed 6-3, 7-5, against Elizabeth Byers. At No. 2 doubles, the Titan pair marked an 8-1 triumph over Gayatri Malhotra and Carla Schmidt.

The Vikings' Beth Larson also had a successful day, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Liz Leffler (Jr. • Racine) at No. 1 singles. Larson then teamed up with Jennifer Roesch to down Leffler and Emily Bostwick (Jr. • Whitefish Bay) by an 8-5 count in the first doubles flight.

Bostwick redeemed herself with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Roesch at No. 2 singles. UW-Oshkosh's fourth individual triumph came from Brianna Theobald (Fr. • Manitowoc), who recorded a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Carla Schmidt. At No. 3 doubles, Megan Etten (Fr. • Howard) and Megan Saari (Fr. • Oshkosh) marked a 9-8 Titan victory over Valde and Greta Elsass.

Lawrence University's Malhotra compiled a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Eva Counsell (Jr. • Elkhorn) at No. 3 singles to round out the scoring.

UW-Oshkosh's next match is with Carroll University on Sept. 18.
