Titans Earn Split Decision With Eagles, Green Knights

Emily Bostwick (Jr. • Whitefish Bay) surrendered just two games in her singles match while adding a doubles win with Liz Leffler (Jr. • Racine) as the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team defeated St. Norbert College and fell to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Oct. 2) at Kolf Sports Center.

The first match of the day saw the Titans take an upsetting loss of 9-0. First, Brianna Theobald (Fr. • Manitowoc) teamed up with Megan Etten in a battle with the Eagles. The Titans fought for every last point during their defeat of 8-6.

At No. 4 singles, Theobald dropped her bout against Jenny Maruyama by a 6-0, 1-6 (10-8) count. Next, the undefeated No. 2 doubles team of Lauren Piotrowski (Fr. • Greendale) and Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) were up against Maruyama and Abby Tresedder. The Titan duo played an unforgettable match of 9-8 its first loss.

In the No. 5 singles competition, Piotrowski came back to guard the net against Mara Weiner, who earned a win of 6-2, 7-5. Tornow also served a strong game before being defeated 6-1, 6-3.

UW-La Crosse then responded with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over No. 2 Bostwick. At singles flight No. 3, Eva Counsell (Jr. • Elkhorn) also stole a few games before losing 6-3, 6-0. No. 1 Leffler attempted to uphold the returns from Kelly Kuether, but Leffler was defeated 7-5, 6-1. In doubles, Leffler joined Bostwick in falling to the Eagles, 8-4.

At the second match of the day, the Titans battled the Green Knights, who they've now bettered in four straight years. The doubles completed a record of 3-0 with No.1 Leffler and Bostwick taking their match 8-2. At flight No.2, Piotrowski and Tornow also earned a win of 8-2. The final pair of Megan Etten (Fr. • Howard) and Theobold tallied a great victory of 8-2.

Leading the singles was No. 2 Bostwick, who commanded each set on her way to a 6-1, 6-1 decision. Next, Anna Reardon of the Green Knights fell to No. 5 Piotrowski in scores of 6-1, 6-2. St. Norbert College challenged No. 6 Whitney Tornow before the Titan prevailed, 6-2, 6-1. Theobold attacked the net before finishing her game with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph.

Kelly Van Handel came out on top against No. 1 Liz Leffler in a spectacular match of 3-6, 7-5 (10-8). No. 3 Counsell then fought for the second set against Maria Slusarek, who won 2-6, 7-5 (10-6).
