Schroeder Wins Diving Title At WIAC Championship

Bailey Schroeder dove to the 1-meter title, Francesca Schiro swam to three top six finishes and the 800-yard freestyle relay squad established a school record to highlight UW-Oshkosh's list of performances at the 50th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championship (Presented by Culver's) that concluded four consecutive days of competition Saturday (Feb. 19) at the Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer.

Schroeder, a freshman, defeated 12 other divers off the 1-meter board with her victorious and season-best score of 412.75. UW-Eau Claire's Sarah Dahlk finished second to Schroeder with a score of 410.60 and UW-Stevens Point's Abby Hopfensperger third at 363.40. Schroeder is UW-Oshkosh's first WIAC 1-meter diving champion since Rachel Heitkamp in 2004.

Schiro, also a freshman, contributed freestyle times of 53.47 seconds for fourth place at 100, 1:57.07 for fifth place at 200 and 24.64 seconds for sixth place at 50 yards. Her times in all three events were season bests.

Schiro additionally helped Emma Hall, Cadence Showalter and Brianna Smith generate a school record with their fourth-place time of 7:59.50 in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

Showalter had a big meet for the Titans as well. Besides her swim on the school-record relay, the freshman Showalter finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.65 seconds and 10th in both the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley with swims of 55.04 seconds and 2:15.69, respectively. Her time in the 100-yard freestyle was a season best.

Smith and UW-Oshkosh teammate Grace Fergus both supplied a trio of top 16 mentions.

Smith etched freestyle times of 19:23.71 for 10th place at 1,650, 2:06.06 for 16th place at 200 and 5:38.24 for 16th place at 500 yards. Fergus posted 12th-place backstroke times of 1:02.85 for 100 and 2:16.08 for 200 yards and a 15th-place swim of 2:17.46 in the 200-yard individual medley.

Hall had a pair of top 16 results with her times of 2:13.43 for ninth place in the 200- and 1:02.12 for 11th place in the 100-yard backstrokes.

UW-Oshkosh also received a ninth-place time of 2:34.89 in the 100- and an 11th-place performance of 1:11.71 in the 200-yard breaststrokes from Morgan Beckett.

Other Titans finishing in the top 16 of their events were Corrina Winkler and Moriah Drabenstadt. Winkler placed 11th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.14 while Drabenstadt ranked 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a swim of 1:19.50.

UW-La Crosse scored 881 points to win its 10th straight WIAC team title and 21st overall. The Eagles were followed in the team listings by second-place UW-Eau Claire with 825 points, third-place UW-Stevens Point with 767, fourth-place UW-Whitewater with 308 and fifth-place UW-Oshkosh with 267.

UW-Oshkosh's Schroeder returns to action Friday (Feb. 25) at the NCAA Division III Central Region Diving Championship in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Division III Championship is scheduled for March 16-19 in Indianapolis, Ind.
