Lutz, Smith Lead Titans In Season Opener Against Pointers

Jennifer Lutz won two events while freshman Brianna Smith finished second twice as the UW-Oshkosh women's swimming & diving team opened its 2021 season with a non-scoring meet against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday (Feb. 6) in Albee Hall.

UW-Oshkosh, which returned to the pool for the first time since the novel coronavirus pandemic canceled the remaining portion of the 2020 season following last February's WIAC Championship, acquired winning swims of 1:04.68 in the 100-yard butterfly and 2:04.67 in the 200-yard freestyle from Lutz on Saturday.

Smith earned her second-place listings with freestyle times of 5:35.79 at 500 yards and 11:28.02 at 1,000.

Lutz and Smith also swam with Jana Metko and Emelia Smith for a third-place time of 4:01.77 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Alyssa Hassel added a pair of top-three finishes with her second-place time of 2:31.45 in the 200-yard individual medley and third-place swim of 1:17.57 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

UW-Oshkosh's remaining second-place finish belonged to Mackenzie Range with her time of 1:17.12 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Titans received a pair of fourth-place efforts from Metko and Olivia Davis. Metko recorded times of 1:02.88 in the 100-yard freestyle and 1:20.72 in the 100-yard breaststroke while Davis registered times of 1:09.26 in the 100-yard butterfly and 2:16.18 in the 200-yard freestyle.

UW-Oshkosh also had Emelia Smith finish third in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:34.91, Corrina Winkler third in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:00.98 and Lexi Gray fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 12:34.94.

The Titans' 200-yard medley relay team of Davis, Gray, Hassel and Range supplied a third-place finish with their combined time of 2:06.08.

UW-Stevens Point had the first-place finisher in 11 of the 13 events, including two individual victories apiece from Anna Pilecky (500- and 1,000-yard freestyle) and Madeline Starr (100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley).

UW-Oshkosh returns to Albee Hall next Saturday (Feb. 13) to host nine-time defending WIAC champion UW-La Crosse.
