Whitney Scores Early In Titans’ Loss To Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis.- Kate Whitney scored her second goal of the season in the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team's loss to UW-Whitewater at Robert W. Fiskum Field in Whitewater on Wednesday.

The Titans (1-8-3, 0-2 WIAC) scored first in the 4-1 loss, but the Warhawks (5-4-2, 1-0-1 WIAC) responded with four of their own on Wednesday night. UW-Whitewater led in shots (17-8), shots on goal (10-4) and corner kicks (4-2). UW-Oshkosh only fouled seven times to UW-Whitewater's 14.

Kate Whitney (Jr. • Skokie, Ill.) scored on her only shot of the match. Brianna Kehl (Fr. • Oconomowoc) shot three times with one on goal, Gabriella Mattio (Fr. • Plainfield, Ill.) shot twice with one on goal, Alayna Clark (Jr. • Watertown), Maddie Anderson (Jr. • Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Rosie Rojewski (Jr. • Cary, Ill.) all recorded one shot on goal and Caylee Fry (Jr. • Loganville) registered a shot.

Sauriol (Jr. • New Lenox, Ill.) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Titans, logging her fifth six-save match of the season.

Whitney opened scoring early, finding the back of the net on a deep free kick in the 11th minute from about 30 yards out. It was her second goal of the season.

The game was tied up on a corner kick in the 21st minute, headed into the goal by Liz Prigge and the Warhawks took the lead with a goal from Gianna Zamborini in the 35th minute.

Brianna Kehl looked to tie it back up at 2-2 on a quick header from just outside the box in the 38th minute, but it went just high of the crossbar. Another shot by Kehl was blocked in the 40th minute.

In the second half, Emily Thill extended the Warhawks' lead to 3-1 on a shot from just outside the arc, followed in the 70th minute by a goal from Brittany Ellinghaus.

Molly Jackson (Jr. • Appleton) was assigned her first yellow card of the season in the 58th minute.

The Titans return home for a Saturday afternoon (Oct. 7) matchup with UW-Stout at 4 p.m. Saturday will be Play for a Cause and Clash's Kids Day. UW-Oshkosh is playing for the Children's Cancer Family Foundation.
