Titans Defeated by Marlins

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team wrapped up their weekend trip to Virginia on Sunday (Sept. 2), falling to Virginia Wesleyan University, which is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation by United Soccer Coaches.

The Titans (0-2) only made four shots with three on goal, while the Marlins shot 21 times with 11 on goal.

Emma Sauriol started in goal for the Titans and played all 90 minutes. She faced 11 shots on goal, saving six. Rachel Quigley only saw three shot in goal for the Marlins, but let two in.

The Marlins scored twice in two minutes for an early lead. In the 28th minute, Shyenne Diaz lost Sauriol on a sidestep boot to the middle of the goal. A minute later, a shot off the left crossbar bounced back to Abigail Smith for the other VWU goal.

Sauriol saved two more Marlin shots before halftime to keep the score 2-0.

UWO struck first in the second half, scoring on an unassisted Anika Roush goal in the 46th minute.

A penalty on Alexandria Soteriou sent Rylie Kaufmann to the line for a penalty kick in the 61st minute. She tied the match back up at 2 with a hard strike to the right side.

Alexis Miller started a run of three VWU goals in seven minutes when she got through two Titan defenders for a 3-2 lead.

A soaring pass from Miller to Grayson Yaeger increased VWU's lead to 4-2 in the 73rd minute and Diaz scored her second goal a minute later, weaving her way through three Titan defenders.

Gabriella Mattio kicked the Titans' last shot of the match in the 78th minute, but it sailed off target.

The Titans will now return Wisconsin and face St. Norbert College in De Pere on Wednesday (Sept. 6) at 7 p.m.
