Women’s Soccer Drops Opener to Christopher Newport in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- In its first game of the season, UW-Oshkosh fell to No. 6 Christopher Newport University 3-1 in a neutral site matchup on Friday night (Sept. 1).

The Titans (0-1-0) were outshot by the Captains (1-0-0) 27-2 in Virginia Beach, with only one shot on goal against CNU's 14.

Anna Zenz, a freshman defender, got off the first shot of the match in the 26th minute, but put too much on it and sailed the ball over Captain goalkeeper, Jaya Daniel. Junior goalkeeper Emma Sauriol was a perfect in goal in the first half to keep UWO in the match, saving all eight shots on goal she faced in the first half, including seven in the first 15 minutes of play.

The score remained without a score until the 72nd minute when a CNU shot got past Sauriol to give the Captains a 1-0 lead and another shot got through on the left side for a two goal lead.

Molly Jackson scored the lone goal for the Titans in the 81st minute on a penalty kick to cut the lead down to one goal, but the Captains responded with another goal in the 84th minute for the final goal of the night.

The Titans return to play in Virginia Beach on Saturday (Sept. 2), facing host school Virginia Wesleyan University (1-0-0), who is currently ranked fourth in the nation.
