Overtime Penalty Kick Keeps Titans Atop WIAC Standings

Rylie Kaufmann's successful penalty kick 45 seconds into the second overtime session gave the visiting UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team a 1-0 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over UW-Platteville on Saturday (Oct. 16).

Kaufmann, who converted her two previous penalty kicks of the 2021 season, earned Saturday's free opportunity after teammate Mallory Knight was tackled in the penalty box area during the 101st minute (100:45) of play. The goal was Kaufmann's sixth of the year, including her second match winner.

UW-Oshkosh's overall record improved to 11-2-1 following its eighth shutout victory of the year. The Titans have won all four of their WIAC contests this season to share first place in the league standings with UW-La Crosse.

UW-Oshkosh showered UW-Platteville goalkeeper Emma Ball with eight shots on goal during regulation. Ball saved all eight shots, including five in the opening period. She didn't face a shot in overtime until Kaufmann's penalty kick.

The Titans totaled 16 shots overall, including four by Knight and three each from Kaufmann and Maddie Hill. Kaufmann accounted for three of UW-Oshkosh's nine shots on goal.

UW-Platteville (7-3-3, 0-3-1 WIAC) launched 12 shots against the Titans, including two that were saved by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Erin Toomey in the 22nd and 69th minute of competition. Toomey has tallied six shutouts this season while allowing just seven goals in 1,103 minutes of activity.

Vanessa Peterson paced the Pioneers with four shots while Amber Lueder and Lydia Smith had two apiece.

Saturday's match was the 28th between the teams. The Titans now lead the series by a 23-4-1 count.

UW-Oshkosh visits UW-Whitewater (10-4, 3-1 WIAC) on Wednesday (Oct. 20) for its final road match of the regular season.
