Titans Defeat Pointers For Ninth Straight Home Win

Greta Hanthorn scored the decisive goal in the opening seconds of the second half and the UW-Oshkosh defense limited UW-Stevens Point to just four shots the rest of the way as the Titans defeated the Pointers, 2-1, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer match held Wednesday (Oct. 6) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Hanthorn helped UW-Oshkosh (9-2-1) improve to 2-0 in WIAC play for the first time since the 2015 season by scoring on a 17-yard kick only 27 seconds (45:27) into the second period. Hanthorn's third goal of the season was assisted by Mallory Knight, who moved into sole possession of seventh place on UW-Oshkosh's all-time scoring list with her 51st career point on the play.

UW-Oshkosh, which permitted only three shots to UW-Stevens Point (4-9, 0-2 WIAC) in the first period, allowed second-half shots to the Pointers during the 60th, 64th, 80th and 82nd minute of activity. Shots by UW-Stevens Point's Hannah Kroupa in the 64th minute and McKenzie Johnson in the 82nd were saved by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Erin Toomey.

Kroupa gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead in the game's 27th minute (26:50) on her goal from the penalty mark. It was her third goal of the season for Kroupa.

The Titans equaled the score four minutes later (30:19) on a 20-yard free kick to the left corner of the goal from Mackenzie Bennett. The goal was Bennett's first of the season.

UW-Oshkosh reached double figures in shots for the 10th time this season by totaling 14 against the Pointers. Maddie Hill paced the Titans with three shots while Bennett, Hanthorn, Alyana Clark, Alyssa Gunderson and Rylie Kaufmann had two apiece.

UW-Stevens Point was held to just seven shots, including two shots each from Johnson, Kroupa and Jessica Camarato.

Toomey guarded the UW-Oshkosh goal for all 90 minutes and saved three shots.

UW-Stevens Point goalkeeper Brookelyn Heiss also played the entire match. She tallied four saves, including three in the opening period.

UW-Oshkosh, which registered its first victory over UW-Stevens Point since 2015, has allowed just eight goals and 38 shots on goal during its 12 matches this season.

Wednesday's win was an historic one as it marked the 200th coaching victory for UW-Oshkosh head coach Erin Coppernoll, who played three seasons at UW-Stevens Point from 1994-96. Coppernoll owns a 200-169-36 record as the head coach of UW-Oshkosh for 17 seasons (2004-present), North Park University (Ill.) for three (2001-03) and Ripon College for one (1999).

The Titans look to extend their home winning streak to 10 consecutive matches when they host UW-Stout Saturday (Oct. 9) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
