Titans Begin WIAC Schedule With Win Over Blugolds

Piper Green and Mallory Knight scored second-half goals as visiting UW-Oshkosh opened its seven-match Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer schedule with a 2-1 victory over UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Oct. 2).

The Titans (8-2-1, 1-0 WIAC) trailed the Blugolds (5-4-2, 0-1), 1-0, before Green tied the score with her 13-yard volley off a corner kick from Riley Kaufmann during the contest's 56th minute (55:30) of activity. Green's goal was her fifth of the season.

UW-Oshkosh tallied its decisive goal on Knight's 14-yard kick in the 73rd minute (72:40). Knight's fifth goal of the year and 50th career point followed a pass from Molly Jackson.

UW-Eau Claire took a 1-0 lead to intermission on Megan Hansen's goal, a 12-yard kick, in the 27th minute (26:50). Hansen's fourth goal of season was assisted by Lola Ruff.

UW-Oshkosh, which has allowed just seven goals and 76 shots this season, was again relentless on defense as it held UW-Eau Claire without a shot over the final 72 minutes of action. The Blugolds were limited to four shots, all by Hansen, and four corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh's 13 shots for the match included four by Knight, three by Green and two by Maddie Hill. The Titans launched four shots in the first half and nine in the second.

Erin Toomey protected the UW-Oshkosh goal for the entire match and allowed the only shot she faced to score.

UW-Eau Claire goalkeeper Anna Sveiven played all 90 minutes as well. She saved six of the eight shots that were fired her way.

Saturday's match was the 40th between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Eau Claire. The Titans have won nine of the last 11 meetings, including a 2-1 double-overtime result in 2019 when they last played.

UW-Oshkosh's win on Saturday was also the 199th for Titan head coach Erin Coppernoll. She has an opportunity to capture her 200th victory when the Titans host UW-Stevens Point (4-8, 0-1 WIAC) on Wednesday (Oct. 6) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. Coppernoll owns a 199-169-36 record as the head coach of UW-Oshkosh for 17 seasons (2004-present), North Park University (Ill.) for three (2001-03) and Ripon College for one (1999).
