First-Half Goal Enough For The Dutch To Defeat Titans

UW-Oshkosh suffered its first women's soccer loss of the 2021 season when Central College (Iowa) edged the Titans, 1-0, on Saturday (Sept. 11) in Pella, Iowa.

The Dutch (4-1) scored their decisive goal on a kick by Grace Coates in the game's 21st minute (20:45) of activity. The goal was the first allowed by UW-Oshkosh this season and the first permitted by the Titans during their last 416 minutes played.

UW-Oshkosh (4-1), which averaged nearly 36 shots and six goals during its previous four matches of the 2021 campaign, was held to just six shots and without a goal for the first time this season on Saturday.

Goalkeepers Jasmyn Bush and Sheila Horstmann preserved Central College's fourth consecutive shutout victory by combining for four saves.

Bush guarded the Dutch goal in the first half and stopped a shot by UW-Oshkosh's Maddie Hill just 121 seconds into play. Horstmann took over for Bush in the second half and blocked shots from Molly Jackson in the 80th minute, Hill in the 87th and Kate Whitney with only nine seconds remaining.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Erin Toomey played all 90 minutes and tallied six saves, including five in the first half.

Central College outshot the Titans, 10-6, and earned all three of the contest's corner kicks. Coates led the Dutch with four shots while Hill paced the Titans with two.

Saturday's game was the fourth between the teams. The Dutch evened the series at 2-2 after winning its second straight contest over the Titans by a 1-0 score.

UW-Oshkosh's next two matches are also in Iowa – Sunday (Sept. 12) at Grinnell College (1-2) and Wednesday (Sept. 15) at the University of Dubuque (3-1).
