Titans Reel In Muskies For Fourth Straight Shutout Victory

The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team continued its impressive start to the 2021 season by limiting Lakeland University to just three shots during a 6-0 victory on Wednesday (Sept. 8) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh has shut out all four of its opponents this year en route to a 4-0 record for the first time since 2012. The Titans' string of shutouts to open a season is the longest in the 28-year history of the school's women's soccer program.

UW-Oshkosh, which hasn't allowed a goal in its last 395 minutes played (dating back to 2019 after the 2020 campaign was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic), began the 2021 season with home wins of 7-0 over Ripon College on Sept. 1, 6-0 over Marian University on Sept. 4 and 4-0 over Bethel University (Minn.) on Sept. 6.

The Titans have dominated all four of their opponents this year by posting season advantages of 23-0 in goals, 141-17 in shots and 78-5 in shots on goal. UW-Oshkosh's 23 goals after four matches are also a program record.

Rylie Kaufmann scored two goals for UW-Oshkosh in Wednesday's match against Lakeland University (0-3) while Alyana Clark and Alyssa Gunderson contributed a pair of assists apiece. The Titans also received goals from Mallory Knight, Piper Green, Greta Hanthorn and Alexia Poulos.

Knight put UW-Oshkosh ahead for good with her fourth goal of the season just 5:12 into play. Her 3-yard scoring tap followed passes from Clark and Green.

UW-Oshkosh went to intermission with a 3-0 lead as Poulos registered her fourth goal of the season and Green her second within a span of 81 seconds. Poulos scored on a successful 22-yard kick in the game's 15th minute (14:55) of activity and Green on a profitable 10-yard boot in the 17th (16:16). Clark assisted on the goal by Poulos while Green's score was unassisted.

The Titans maintained their three-goal lead until Kaufmann converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute (70:13). The goal was Kaufmann's third of the season.

UW-Oshkosh marked its final two goals within a span of 55 seconds as Hanthorn scored in the 81st minute (80:10) on a 22-yard kick and Kaufmann in the 82nd (81:05) on a 10-yard boot. Gunderson assisted on both goals, the second of the season for Hanthorn and the fourth of the year for Kaufmann.

The Titans concluded the match with 39 shots, including 25 on goal. UW-Oshkosh was led by the six shots from Green and the five from both Maddie Anderson and Mackenzie Bennett.

Virginia Perez had all three shots for Lakeland University. Her lone shot on goal was saved by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Emma Sauriol in the game's 37th minute.

Sauriol and Hannah Felker combined for the UW-Oshkosh goalkeeping shutout. Sauriol protected the Titans' net in the first half and Felker in the second. Both players were appearing in their first collegiate match.

Lakeland University also divided up its goalkeeping duties as Faith Turley played the first half for the Muskies and Erin Tomlinson the second. Turley allowed three goals and saved 11 shots while Tomlinson yielded three goals and stopped eight shots.

UW-Oshkosh and Lakeland University were playing for just the third time and the first since the 2000 season. The Titans have won all three contests between the teams.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Iowa for its next three matches, visiting Central College on Saturday (Sept. 11), Grinnell College on Sunday (Sept. 12) and University of Dubuque next Wednesday (Sept. 15).
