All-WIAC Soccer Team Includes Three Titans
UW-Oshkosh's Jessica Galason, Felicia Retrum and Addie Schmitz were each named to the All-WIAC Women's Soccer Team for the first time.
Galason was one of three goalkeepers selected to the 22-member squad while Retrum was among six defenders to receive all-league recognition and Schmitz one of seven midfielders.
UW-Oshkosh concluded the 2017 season with an 8-8-4 record, including a third-place 3-1-3 mark in WIAC play.
Galason, a junior, compiled a 7-7-4 record in more than 1,400 minutes played this season. She made a league-leading 136 saves and 7.56 saves per game while starting 16 of the 18 contests that she participated in. Galason ranks second in the WIAC with a .866 save percentage and fourth with four shutouts.
Galason had seven games with double-digit saves this year, including a season-high 16 against UW-La Crosse on Oct. 28. She also made 13 saves against UW-River Falls on Oct. 31 and 12 more against the Falcons on Sept. 30.
Galason collected 10 saves in shutouts against University of Dubuque (Iowa) on Sept. 16, UW-Whitewater on Oct. 4 and UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 18. She also produced a seven-save shutout performance against UW-Platteville on Oct. 7 and shared goalkeeping duties during UW-Oshkosh's shutouts against Goucher College (Md.) on Sept. 1, Grinnell College (Iowa) on Sept. 10 and Lawrence University on Oct. 11.
Retrum, a senior, played a significant role in helping the Titans record eight shutouts this season.
Retrum also contributed three points on one goal and one assist in 19 games, including seven as a starter. She put five of her nine shots on goal.
Retrum tallied her second career goal during a 2-0 victory over UW-Platteville. She was also credited with an assist during the Titans' 10-0 win over Lawrence University.
Retrum concluded her UW-Oshkosh career with nine points on two goals and five assists. She placed 27 of her 54 shots on goal in 78 games played, including 40 as a starter.
Schmitz finished her freshman season leading the Titans with 36 shots and 23 shots on goal. She led the team with four assists and added a pair of goals in 20 matches, including 16 as a starter.
Schmitz scored UW-Oshkosh's lone goal during a 1-1 tie with UW-River Falls on Sept. 30. She then tallied a goal and two assists during the Titans' 3-2 triumph over UW-River Falls during the opening round of the WIAC Championship.
Schmitz also registered assists against University of Dubuque and UW-Whitewater during the WIAC Championship semifinals. She attempted a season-high five shots against both Concordia University Wisconsin on Oct. 22 and UW-River Falls on Oct. 31.
League champion UW-La Crosse had seven players on the All-WIAC Team while UW-Whitewater had four, UW-Stevens Point three, UW-River Falls and UW-Stout two apiece, and UW-Eau Claire one.
UW-La Crosse swept the major WIAC awards as Margaret Harings and Maya Schmitt were named Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. UW-La Crosse also received the league's Coaching Staff of the Year award.
The All-WIAC Team also included UW-La Crosse's Lily Brock, Megan Carroll, Alex Cording, Maddie Granos and Kaitlyn Villars; UW-Whitewater's Anna Boyd, Payton DeLuga, Marie Lesperance and Adria Schueler; UW-Stevens Point's Maddy Hardyman, Sarah Peplinski and Alexis Petersen; UW-River Falls' Carrie Anderson and Abby Soderholm; UW-Stout's Kaitlyn Hess and Sydney Kasper; and UW-Eau Claire's Emily Sullivan.
UW-La Crosse (17-1-3) won the WIAC title with a 7-0 record before clinching the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship with a shootout victory over UW-Whitewater in the WIAC tournament final. UW-La Crosse enters this week's NCAA postseason action ranked 15th in the country by the United Soccer Coaches.
UW-Whitewater (14-3-4) finished second in the WIAC standings with a 4-2-1 record. The Warhawks were followed by third-place UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stout (9-6-5) at 3-1-3, fifth-place UW-Stevens Point (9-8-2) at 2-3-2, sixth-place UW-River Falls (5-14-1) at 2-4-1, seventh-place UW-Eau Claire (5-11-1) at 2-5 and eighth-place UW-Platteville (7-11) at 0-7.
