Lady Reds Spoil Titans' Home Opener

Carthage College scored three minutes into play and then added a pair of second-half goals to defeat the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team, 3-0, on Wednesday (Sept. 13) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The Lady Reds (4-2) jumped in front of the Titans (1-3-1) quickly. After a UW-Oshkosh corner kick and a shot by the Titans' Kendra Jepson, Danielle Noverini lofted an 18-yard shot into the goal to give Carthage College the lead only 175 seconds (2:55) into the match. 

Carthage College went on to outshoot UW-Oshkosh, 8-4, rest of the first half and take a 1-0 advantage to intermission. The Lady Reds had five other shots on goal during the opening period while the Titans had just two.  

Carthage College doubled its lead in the game's 57th minute (56:33) on a 20-yard kick by Maggie Washelesky. Her score followed a pass from Talia Jaramillo.

The Lady Reds made their advantage 3-0 on Samantha Sisto's 15-yard boot during the 68th minute (67:34). Joanne Stanfa was credited with the assist on the Sisto goal.

Carthage College proceeded to outshoot UW-Oshkosh, 9-3, in the second half.

UW-Oshkosh managed just eight shots during its home opener of the 2017 season. Only two of the Titans shots were on goal, a kick by Hannah Zacher in the 16th minute and a header by Fiona Neary in the 31st. Zachar led the Titans with two shots overall. 

Carthage College, which improved to 3-1-1 against UW-Oshkosh, launched 17 shots, including six by Erin Otto, five by Washelesky and three by Noverini. In addition to the two second-half scores, Carthage College had three other shots on goal during the final period of action.

UW-Oshkosh split its goalkeeping duties as Jessica Galason played the first half and Madelyn Runyan the second. Galason saved six of the seven shots she faced while Runyan stopped five of the seven shots she greeted.

Carthage College goalkeeper Emily Furmanek saved the only shot she faced while a member of the Lady Reds defense recorded a team save.

The Titans concluded the match with a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh will host the University of Dubuque (Iowa) on Saturday (Sept. 16) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
