Warhawks Pull Out Overtime Win Over Titans

Brianna Reid's 16th and final shot was the match winner as the nationally ranked UW-Whitewater women's soccer team escaped with a 3-2 overtime victory over defending WIAC co-champion UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (Oct. 5) in Whitewater.

Reid scored 94 seconds into the extra session (91:34 overall) by converting an 8-yard header following a corner kick launched by Alyssa Lennon. Reid's WIAC-leading 10th goal of the season came on her second shot of the overtime period.

UW-Oshkosh (6-5-1, 1-1 WIAC), which shared last year's league title with UW-La Crosse, took a 1-0 lead over UW-Whitewater (12-1, 2-0) on Alyssa Arnold's unassisted 20-yard kick during the 18th minute of play. The goal was Arnold's third of the season, including her second in as many matches.

UW-Whitewater, ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, drew even with the Titans on Marie Lesperance's 10-yard boot in the 24th minute (23:27). Lesperance scored off a free kick served by Carina Krausert.

The teams remained tied until UW-Whitewater's Carly Pottle broke the stalemate with her 9-yard header in the 49th minute (48:46). Pottle earned her score off a cross from Kaci Schonert.

Less than a minute later, the match was tied again as UW-Oshkosh's Robyn Elliott scored her fourth goal of the season on an unassisted 20-yard kick at the 49:42 mark of the contest.

UW-Whitewater, which won its 11th straight match, tallied advantages of 38-11 in shots and 10-3 in corner kicks. The Warhawks just missed on scoring in the 64th minute as consecutive kicks by Adria Schueler hit the post and Reid hit the crossbar.

In addition to the 16 shots attempted by Reid, UW-Whitewater also received five shots from Pottle and four from Schonert.

UW-Oshkosh was led by the six shots from Elliott and the two from Arnold.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Madelyn Runyan saved nine shots during the contest, including six in the first half.

UW-Whitewater had two players protect their goal, as Sara Klimisch allowed two goals and saved three shots in 61:40 of action while Jennie Novak stopped two shots during 29:54 of activity.

UW-Oshkosh treks to UW-Platteville for another WIAC contest on Saturday (Oct. 8).
