Titans Tame Pointers With Shutout Victory

Christina Mauthe, Robyn Elliott and Courtney Leister scored second-half goals to give the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team a 3-0 victory over UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday (Oct. 6) in Stevens Point.

UW-Oshkosh (8-2, 3-0 WIAC) extended its winning streak to six straight matches with the victory and remained tied for the WIAC lead with unbeatens UW-La Crosse (3-0) and five-time defending league champion UW-Whitewater (2-0).

UW-Stevens Point (2-12, 0-3 WIAC), which has lost its five games to the Titans, started the match with shots by Emily Dietrich and Kayla Huber that were saved by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Nina Muzi in the first eight minutes of play.

However, those two shots were the only ones attempted by the Pointers in the first half as the Titans went to the break with a 7-2 advantage in shots.

UW-Oshkosh had only one shot on goal in the opening period, a kick that was blocked by UW-Stevens Point goalkeeper Kristen Churkey in the game's 40th minute.

UW-Stevens Point started the second half much like the first. The Pointers attempted the period's first three shots, including an attempt that was saved by Muzi during the 50th minute of play.

The Titans broke a scoreless battle in the 63rd minute (62:46) when Mauthe finished an unassisted shot for her fourth goal of the season.

Just three minutes later (65:39), Robyn Elliott doubled UW-Oshkosh's lead with her sixth goal of the season. Ally Vandenberg provided a pass to Elliott, who finished her shot with a left-footed kick to the lower-left corner of the net.

UW-Oshkosh secured the win when Leister tallied her second goal of the season in the game's 72nd minute (71:30). Leister scored off a pass delivered by Felicia Retrum.

Muzi was forced to make two more saves in the remaining minutes, but UW-Oshkosh held the lead firmly for the rest of the match.

UW-Oshkosh ended the match with advantages of 25-10 in shots, 11-6 in shots on goal and 5-2 in corner kicks. Sisters Rachel and Robyn Elliott led the Titans with five shots apiece.

UW-Stevens Point, which suffered its ninth straight loss, was paced by Huber's three shots.

Muzi played the full match in goal for the Titans and recorded six saves to tally her second shutout of the season.

Churkey saved six shots while guarding the UW-Stevens Point goal for the first 79 minutes (78:59). Mackenzie Madison relieved Churkey and blocked two shots during the game's final 11 minutes (11:01).

UW-Oshkosh will host Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday (Oct. 10) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
