Titans Advance To Title Match Of WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh scored a tying goal in the final minute of regulation and then converted all four of its shots during a penalty-kick shootout to defeat UW-Stout in a semifinal round contest of the WIAC Women's Soccer Championship held Thursday (Nov. 7) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (11-7-2) advances to play regular-season champion UW-Whitewater (15-0-4) in the championship game of the six-team tournament on Saturday (Nov. 9) in Whitewater. The 14th-ranked Warhawks moved to the 6 p.m. title match with Thursday's 3-0 victory over UW-Eau Claire (8-9-3). The winner between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater earns the WIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stout (8-9-2) ended regulation in a 2-2 tie. Following two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, the Titans kept their season alive by outscoring the Blue Devils, 4-2, in the penalty-kick shootout. The match goes down in history as a tie.

The Titans jumped to a 2-0 lead during the best-of-five penalty-kick session on goals by Megan White and Robyn Elliott. The teams then alternated goals as Lauren Kizlik and Emily Ferger scored for UW-Stout and Anna Beckerleg and Kali Jahn for UW-Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh rallied from a pair of deficits in the second half. The Titans sent the contest to overtime on Nicole Palmquist's three-yard kick with 54 seconds left. It was the first goal of the season for Palmquist, who scored after retrieving a corner kick taken by teammate Christina Mauthe.

After a scoreless first half, UW-Stout took a 1-0 lead on Lauren Kizlik's 13-yard kick during the game's 47th minute (46:25). The Blue Devils held their advantage until Beckerleg scored for the Titans off a pass from Elliott in the 60th minute (59:43). The four-yard kick marked Beckerleg's third goal of the season.

UW-Stout, which lost a 1-0 decision to UW-Oshkosh on Sept. 21, took a 2-1 lead on a 23-yard kick by Kelly Conn during the 82nd minute (81:35).

Both teams threatened often, as UW-Stout goalkeeper Paige Meyer stopped 13 shots and UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Katie Berkopec nine. Meyey recorded six saves in the first half and four in the second, while Berkopec tallied five in the second period. Berkopec also blocked the first shot taken by UW-Stout during the penalty-kick shootout.

UW-Oshkosh finished the contest with 22 shots and seven corner kicks. The Titans were led in shots by the seven from Chelsea Kierszh, four from Amanda Baalke and three from Mauthe.

UW-Stout ended the match with 17 shots and two corner kicks. Jenna Kizlik had four shots and Conn, Jessica Goodrich and Lauren Kizlik three each for the Blue Devils.

UW-Oshkosh is appearing in the title match of the WIAC Championship for the fifth time in school history. The Titans won the contest in 2011, while suffering defeats in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
