Titans To Host "Support Our Troops Day"

The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team will participate in the WIAC "Playing For A Cause" campaign when it hosts the University of Chicago (Ill.) on Saturday, October 20. The match starts at 3:30 p.m. at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh head coach Erin Coppernoll selected "Support Our Troops" as her team's cause for the event. The cause was chosen because a former UW-Oshkosh player is currently serving the United States in Afghanistan.

Katy Werginz played for UW-Oshkosh in 2001, 2004-05 and 2008. Following her freshman year, Werginz's National Guard unit was activated and she reported to Fort Bragg, N.C. She was again called to duty in 2007, experiencing combat in Iraq.

On the soccer field, Werginz was one of the top scorers in program history. She tallied 22 goals and six assists for 50 points, the sixth-highest total by a Titan. Werginz helped UW-Oshkosh to records of 15-4-3 in 2004, 13-6-1 in 2005 and 13-3-1 during 2001.

"This year's 'Play For A Cause Day' is extra special, as Katy has been a huge supporter of our program from the minute she set foot on campus," Coppernoll said. "She supported our team even in years when she was unable to participate due to her National Guard service and graduation. It's a great way to support many people who are serving for our freedom."

The women's soccer team will be taking donations at the game. These donations will be used for care packages and sent to Werginz's unit stationed in Bagram, Afghanistan. Money will also be accepted and used to purchase supplies for the troops.

This is the second year of the WIAC "Playing For A Cause" campaign, with UW-Oshkosh supporting Autism Awareness last season.
