Titans Defeat Pioneers To Clinch Spot In WIAC Tournament

Chelsea Kierszh (Jr. • Oshkosh) scored the first goal of each half as UW-Oshkosh secured a spot in the upcoming WIAC Women's Soccer Tournament with a 4-1 victory over UW-Platteville on Monday (Oct. 22) in Platteville.

Action in the six-team WIAC Tournament begins next Tuesday (Oct. 30) with a pair of first-round matches. UW-Oshkosh, which won the tournament a year ago, will be seeded fourth, fifth or sixth for this year's event. Tournament pairings will be announced following UW-Oshkosh's home contest on Saturday (Oct. 27) with UW-Stout.

Kierszh gave UW-Oshkosh (10-4-3/3-2-2 WIAC) a 1-0 lead when she scored off a pass from Heidi Hetzel (Fr. • Sheboygan) in the 41st minute (40:29) of play. She then increased the Titans' advantage to 3-0 with an unassisted score in the game's 58th minute (57:27). The goals were the second and third of the season for Kierszh.

UW-Oshkosh took a 2-0 lead when Kaitlin Kapitan (So. • Waukesha) scored a goal assisted by Ashley Nicholas (Jr. • Wrightstown) and Lindsey Collette (Sr. • Green Bay) just 25 seconds (44:35) before intermission. It was the first goal of the season for Kapitan.

Carly Roiniotis (Sr. • Pleasant Prairie) closed the Titans' scoring with her goal in the 70th minute (69:42). Nicole Strieker (Sr. • Janesville) earned the assist on Roiniotis' second goal of the season.

UW-Platteville (4-11/1-6 WIAC) cut its deficit to 4-1 on Melissa Dunlavy's header in the 81st minute (80:45). Her shot came off a free kick from Sarah Eck.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 16 shots and four corner kicks. Amanda Baalke (So. • Pewaukee) had five shots and Kierszh, Strieker and Megan White (So. • Kimberly) two each for the Titans.

UW-Platteville, which had its hope of participating in the league tournament ruined with the loss, managed just four shots and one corner kick. The Pioneers had four players launch one shot each.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeepers Katie Berkopec (Jr. • Apple Valley, Minn.) and Angela Christenson (Fr. • Racine) each saved one shot. Berkopec played 81:08 of the match and Christenson 8:52.

UW-Platteville goalkeeper Cassie Blatz saved six shots while allowing all four goals.
