Titans Unable To Hold Down Warhawks

Kelsey Finn and Christina Tooren scored two goals each as UW-Whitewater secured at least a share of the 2012 WIAC women's soccer championship with a 5-1 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (Oct. 17) in Whitewater.

Finn gave the Warhawks (11-4-1, 6-0 WIAC) a 1-0 lead when she converted a free kick in the 24th minute (23:04) of play. She then closed UW-Whitewater's scoring with another free kick in the 68th minute (67:13).

Tooren scored consecutive goals in the contest's 45th (44:56) and 59th (58:18) minutes to give UW-Whitewater a 3-0 lead. Her first goal came off a pass from Samantha Hoerchner.

UW-Whitewater, which improved to 10-1-1 in its last 12 matches, made the score 5-1 on Sarah Sedlar's goal in the 66th minute (65:13). Jenna Woodson assisted Sedlar's scoring strike.

UW-Oshkosh cut its deficit to 3-1 when Lindsey Collette (Sr. • Green Bay) scored off a pass from Nicole Palmquist (So. • Oshkosh) in the game's 60th minute (59:15). The goal was Collette's third of the season.

UW-Whitewater posted advantages of 30-14 in shots and 9-1 in corner kicks. The Warhawks were led by the nine shots of Tooren and the five of Sedlar. Palmquist paced the Titans (9-3-3, 2-2-2 WIAC) with three shots.

Both goalkeepers were busy as Katie Berkopec (Jr. • Apple Valley, Minn.) saved nine shots for UW-Oshkosh and Jordan Myers five for UW-Whitewater.

UW-Oshkosh returns to J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium to host the University of Chicago (Ill.) on Saturday (Oct. 20).
