Titans Triumphant In Season Opener
The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team allowed just three shots as it opened the 2012 season with a 1-0 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) on Friday (Aug. 31) in Stevens Point.
UW-Oshkosh, which improved to 4-1-1 in its last six season openers, recorded the decisive score on an unassisted goal by Megan White (So. • Kimberly) in the 35th (34:59) minute of play. It was the first career goal for White.
Gustavus Adolphus College (0-1) had a good chance to score late in the contest, but Maggie Lane's header sailed above the goal in the 73rd minute.
UW-Oshkosh (1-0) owned the advantage with its 12 shots and six corner kicks. The Titans totaled seven shots in the first half and five corner kicks in the second.
Gustavus Adolphus College, a first-time opponent of UW-Oshkosh, attempted two of its three shots in the second period. The Gusties (0-1) earned three corner kicks.
UW-Oshkosh had 10 players attempt a shot, including two by both Ashley Nicholas (Jr. • Wrightstown) and Carly Roiniotis (Sr. • Pleasant Prairie). Lane, Anna Street and Liz Underwood each had one shot for Gustavus Adolphus College.
Both goalkeepers went the distance, with UW-Oshkosh's Katie Berkopec (Jr. • Apple Valley, Minn.) saving two shots for her third career shutout. The Gusties' Jessica Richert stopped seven shots, including four in the first half.
UW-Oshkosh takes to the field against the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Saturday (Sept. 1) in Stevens Point.
