Spaith Selected To All-North Region Team

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has announced its all-region teams for the 2011 women's soccer season, and for the first time since 2006 UW-Oshkosh had a player recognized.

Defender Kelsey Spaith (Sr. • Madison) was named to the NCAA Division III All-North Region squad as a third-team selection. She was one of five WIAC players honored, including first-team selections Emily Gerber of UW-Whitewater and Courtney Tideman of UW-Stout. Also picked to the third team were Samantha Greer of UW-Stevens Point and Emily Stanke of UW-Stout.

Spaith started all 23 contests this past season and led a UW-Oshkosh defense that allowed just 0.79 goals per match. That figure, which included seven shutouts, was the best in the WIAC.

Spaith also enjoyed her best offensive season in 2011 with three goals on 10 shots. She was successful on all three of her penalty kicks as UW-Oshkosh marked shootout victories over UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater in the WIAC Tournament and Ohio Wesleyan University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship. During her four years, Spaith started 41 of the 57 matches that she played in. Spaith totaled one goal and three assists in 2010 and one goal and one assist in 2009. The Titans had goals against averages of 1.47 in 2010 and 1.53 in 2009.

UW-Oshkosh finished the 2011 season with a 12-7-4 record. The Titans, who placed third in the WIAC standings with a 5-3 record, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship before suffering a 2-0 loss to Washington University (Mo.).

Besides Gerber and Tideman, other players named to the All-North Region first team were Anna Aquino, Chelsea Frye and Katy Wendt of Wartburg College (Iowa), Ali Nelson and Sarah Rounds of Concordia College (Minn.), Kat Lenhart of Macalester College (Minn.), Sami Meyman of College Saint Benedict (Minn.), Abby Wills of Carleton College (Minn.) and Kate Young of Loras College (Iowa).
