Golden Flyers Score In Closing Minutes To Nip Titans

Elizabeth Howell's goal with just under five minutes remaining in regulation lifted the Nazareth College (N.Y.) women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Sunday (Sept. 4) in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Howell scored the decisive goal on her only shot of the match. Christine Belding was credited with an assist on Howell's goal, which came with 4:51 left.

The match between the first-time opponents featured strong defensive play, including four saves by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Katie Berkopec (So. • Apple Valley, Minn.).

Nazareth College finished the contest with 10 shots, including three by Sarah Eichelberger and two by Erica Conte. Goalkeeper Abbie Carey had one save for the Golden Flyers (1-0-1).

UW-Oshkosh (0-2) was held to just four shots, one each by Becca Blue (Jr. • Kimberly), Kiley Hauck (So. • Hubertus), Amanda Leach (Jr. • Waukesha) and Nicole Strieker (Jr. • Janesville).

UW-Oshkosh's first two matches of the 2011 season were part of the Cardinal Classic hosted by State University of New York-Plattsburgh. Strieker was the Titans' lone representative on the 11-member all-tournament team.

UW-Oshkosh plays its first home match on Saturday (Sept. 10) against Saint Mary's University (Minn.).
