Overtime Goal Lifts Titans Past Eagles

Carmen Fiordellisi (So. • Howard) scored in the second minute of overtime as the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team opened WIAC play with a 1-0 victory over UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Sept. 12) in La Crosse.

Fiordellisi gave UW-Oshkosh (2-2/1-0 WIAC) the thrilling triumph when she followed Jessica Erny's (So. • Wauwatosa) pass with a shot into the net at the 91:58 mark of the contest. The goal, Fiordellisi's third of the season, allowed UW-Oshkosh to win its WIAC opener for the third time in four years.

The match was scoreless through regulation despite advantages of 32-13 in shots and 8-2 in corner kicks for UW-La Crosse (1-1-1/0-1 WIAC). UW-Oshkosh owned two of the three shots launched in overtime.

UW-Oshkosh had nine players attempt shots, including Erny, Fiordellisi, Caitlin Casey (Jr. • Waukesha), Anna Guilfoil (So. • Madison), Alaina Landi (So. • Waukesha) and Nicole Strieker (Fr. • Janesville) who fired two each. UW-La Crosse had 10 players attempt shots, including Lindsay Wilde who launched 14 and Amy Warren who dispatched five.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Brittany Walder (So. • Waukesha) saved 14 shots to record her second career shutout. The Titans also had a defender notch a save.

Sagan Pizzingrilli stopped eight shots while guarding the UW-La Crosse goal.

UW-Oshkosh, which snapped a three-match losing streak to UW-La Crosse, travels to UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday (Sept. 15) for its next contest.
