Defending WIAC Champion Pointers Shut Out Titans

Defending WIAC champion UW-Stevens Point registered its fourth straight shutout in a 5-0 women's soccer victory over UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday (Sept. 15) in Stevens Point.

UW-Steven Point (4-1/2-0 WIAC), which hasn't allowed a goal since its 3-0 season-opening loss to Wheaton College (Ill.) on Sept. 1, jumped ahead of UW-Oshkosh (2-3/1-1 WIAC) on Vicki Bieschke's goal just 3:44 into play. Bieschke headed her shot into the net off a feed from Kirsti Nickels.

The Pointers went to intermission leading 2-0 on Jackie Spees' unassisted goal at the 25:00 mark of the match.

UW-Stevens Point upped its offensive attack in the second half with goals by Nickel, Sam Greer and Andrea Peiffer. Greer and Nickels scored the final two goals for the Pointers with unassisted strikes at the 65:04 and 81:20 marks of the contest, respectively. Peiffer gave UW-Stevens Point a 3-0 lead when she scored off a pass from Spees at the 54:35 mark of the match.

UW-Oshkosh, which suffered its third straight loss to UW-Stevens Point, attempted 10 shots. The Titans were led by the three shots of Jessica Erny (So. • Wauwatosa) and the two of Carmen Fiordellisi (So. • Howard). Erny, Fordellisi, Lindsey Collette (Fr. • Green Bay), Lauren Heinen (Fr. • Greendale) and Alaina Landi (So. • Waukesha) each had one shot on goal.

UW-Stevens Point tallied 20 shots, including 11 shots on goal. Spees led the Pointers with four shots, while Greer tallied three and Nickels, Peiffer, Sarah Gugel and Kelsey Majerus two each. UW-Stevens Point was on the short end of a 5-4 count in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Brittany Walder (So. • Waukesha) stopped six shots in the loss. UW-Stevens Point goalkeeper Liz Hunter blocked five shots en route to the victory.
