Titans Compete At Loras College Open

DUBUQUE, Iowa- UW-Oshkosh men's wrestling had 10 athletes participate in the Loras College (Iowa) Open on Saturday (Jan. 27).

In the 125-pound category, JP Culver (Fr. • Vicksburg, Mich.) pinned Ariel Vega of St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in 3:57 before moving on to the next round where he was defeated in a fall by Jaydale Whitlock of Iowa Central Community College. In the consolation bracket, he was defeated by Daniel Guanajuato, who was wrestling unattached.

In the 141-pound matches, Andrew Schad (So. • Kiel) won after pinning Wyatt Doty (unattached) in 1:08 before being losing by 17-2 technical fall to Sam Hrabovsky (unattached). His day ened after a 24-5 major decision loss to Iowa Central's Kaden Hawkins-Hinson.

JoJo Mendoza (So. • Racine) won the first round of the 149-pound competition by a 12-7 decision over Callum McAllister of Cornell College (Iowa). He moved on to pin Jesse Hinkle of Indian Hills Community College at 2:46 before being defeated by Carter Fousek of Iowa State University in the third round by fall. Loras' Kael Lucero earned a 7-2 decision victory over Mendoza in the third-place bracket.

In the 165-pound bout, Joey Spizzirri (So. • Palatine, Ill.) lost by a 15-0 technical foul to Peyton Asbury of Indian Hills.

Austin Wilkins of Cornell College defeated Gage Coppock (So. • Mosinee) in the first round by a 4-1 decision. Coppock moved on to pin Luke Battaglie (Loras) in 1:41 before losing to Indian Hills' Jaquan East by fall.

Michael Loger (So. • Andover, Minn.) won the first round of the 184-pound class after pinning Liam Speich (unattached) in 34 seconds. He moved on to fall to Ein Carlos of Grand View University (Iowa). He started the consolation bracket with a 6-0 win over Drew Deer from Cornell before dropping a 4-3 decision to Jackson Sapp (unattached).

In the 197-pound category, Matt Hanke (Sr. • Theresa) fell to Ansel Cervantes of Indian Hills by 11-3 decision before receiving a bye the second round. He went on to face Aiden Rice of Loras where he won by 19-1 technical fall and lost after being pinned by Chase Stegall (unattached).

UW-Oshkosh had three wrestlers in the 285-pound class. Camden Harms (Fr. • Mahomet, Ill.) was overcome by fall against Joseph Sanders of Iowa Central before pinning Loras' Charlie Langeberg and St. Ambrose's Raymond Hughes in 49 seconds and 4:07, respectively. Landen Schemmel (Cornell) handed Harms his second loss in a 4-1 decision. Brodie Driessen (Fr. • West Allis) also lost in the first round after being pinned by Noah Broderson of York University (Neb.). Cooper Colson from Iowa Central pinned Driessen at 50 seconds. Easton Fleshman (unattached) defeated Guyon Cyprian (Sr. • Chicago, Ill.) by 4-0 decision to send him to the consolation bracket, where he earned two wins. Cyprian Jr. earned a 10-2 major decision victory over Evan Foreman from the University of Dubuque (Iowa) and a 4-2 decision over Sanders. Mason Hawkins, wrestling unattached, took Cyprian Jr. out of the bracket with a 4-1 win.

Titans are set to return Friday (Feb. 2) to face off against Augsburg University (Minn.). The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
