Titans See Early Success at Pointer Open

STEVENS POINT, Wis.Beau Yineman finished in first place as Josh Te Stroete, Nate Stokhaug, Cody Welker, and Luc Valdez all finished in the top-6 at the Pointer Open this afternoon, hosted by UW-Stevens Point.

At 197, Yineman recorded three straight falls over Garrett Kilgas (Luther, Fall 1:27), Elijah Brockie (North Central, Fall 2:35), and Gage Linahon (Central, Fall 3:46). In the championship match, Yineman posted a 9-2 decision over Andrew Demos (North Central).

At 125, Luc Valdez won his first three rounds at the Pointer Open. Valdez posted a win by fall over Christian Guzman (North Central, Fall 4:39). Valdez posted a 9-3 decision win over Cade Odrobina (Albion) before winning by a major decision (9-1) over Jesse Martinez (Luther). Shane Corrigan posted a 14-4 major decision over Valdez in the semifinal. Valdez posted a 5-3 decision win over Joey Malito (North Central). In the third place match, Luca Paladino (Stevens Point) posted a 5-3 decision win over Valdez.

Welker competed at 157 for the Titans, finishing in the fifth place. Welker won by a 12-5 decision over Spencer Daves (Central). Welker won in the second round by a medical forfeit before winning by a fall over Jamaal Salary (North Central, Fall 4:03). Bryce McDonough (Luther) won by a 9-2 decision over Welker. Mitchell Cook (Unattached) won by a tech fall (16-0) over Welker. In the fifth-place match, Welker won by a tech fall of Salary.

Te Stroete opened with a tech fall win over Cody Weix (Stevens Point, TF 16-1) and a decision over Brodie Toth (Central, 8-2). Te Stroete fell in back-to-back decisions, dropping matches to Demos (North Central, 5-0) and Brockie (North Central, 7-1). In the fifth-place match, Jacob Steenhoek (Luther College) won by a fall over Te Stroete (Fall 1:58).

At 165, Stokhaug opened with a pair of falls as he defeated Colby Tool (Central, Fall 2:11) and Peyton Carll (Itasca, Fall 3:45). Brandon Peckham posted a 6-5 decision over Stokhaug in the quarterfinals. Stokhaug won by fall over Peyton Brooks (Albion, Fall 3:55) before dropping a 9-2 decision to Andrew Sims (Eureka). Braeden Hendel (Luther) won by decision over Stokhaug (6-5).
