Three Titans Finish Third In Gold Division Of North Country Open

UW-Oshkosh had 14 wrestlers earn a top six finish, including four in the Gold Division, at the Saint John's University North Country Open on Sunday (Jan. 23) in Collegeville, Minn.

The non-scoring tournament featured nearly 200 competitors across all divisions of collegiate wrestling.

Patrick Curran at 184 pounds, Beau Yineman at 197 and Jordan Lemcke at 285 all finished third for the Titans in the Gold Division. UW-Oshkosh also received a sixth-place finish from Cody Welker at 165 pounds and consolation titles from Bryce Jankowski at 149, Nate Stokhaug at 157 and Preston Morgan at 165.

Curran compiled a 3-1 record, including a 5-3 decision over Connor Chloupek of Concordia College (Minn.) in their third-place bout. Curran opened with an 11-7 victory over Chloupek before suffering a 15-0 loss to eventual champion Nick Rogge of Augsburg University (Minn.). Curran rebounded from his setback to Rogge with a 6-5 win over Concordia College's Ayden Friese.

Yineman, the top-ranked NCAA Division III wrestler in his weight class by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, tallied a 3-1 record and won his third-place contest with a 20-0 victory over Augsburg University's Parker Venz. Yineman lost a 5-2 result to Zach Peterson of Division II Augustana University (S.D.) in his first bout before winning on a medical forfeit by Concordia College's Gabriel Zierden and etching an 8-0 victory over Spencer Mooberry of Division I North Dakota State University.

Lemcke, ranked fourth nationally, marked a 2-1 record and captured third place with his 4-0 triumph over seventh-ranked Tyler Kim of Augsburg University. Lemcke was pinned by Dominik Vacura of North Dakota State University in 3:37 of his opener before edging Juan Mora of North Dakota State University, 2-0.

Welker split his four contests, including a 15-0 loss to Devin Donovan of Division II St. Cloud State University in their fifth-place match. Welker opened the tournament with a 7-3 win over Carl Leuer of Augsburg University before suffering a 6-0 loss to Mason Gode of North Dakota State University. Welker advanced to his fifth-place bout with a medical forfeit over Concordia College's Bret Wilson.

Jankowski concluded the tournament with a 3-1 record and won his consolation final with a 2-1 over UW-Oshkosh teammate Joseph Mendoza.

Stokhaug won two of his three contests, including a 12-0 decision over UW-Oshkosh teammate Brandon Lenczner in the consolation final.

Morgan earned his victory in the consolation final by sticking Augsburg University's Connor Thorsten to the mat in 6:49. Morgan finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.

UW-Oshkosh also received Gold Division records of 0-2 from Colby McHugh at 125 pounds, 0-2 from Denis Murphy at 133, 0-2 from Matt Joyce at 141, 1-2 from Mendoza at 149, 0-2 from Isaac Ortegon at 157, 1-2 from Lenczner at 157, 0-2 from Muzi Sitshela at 165 and 0-2 from Devin Keast at 184.

Led by the second-place finish of Cade Schmitz at 149 pounds, UW-Oshkosh had an excellent showing in the Silver Division of the North Country Open.

Schmitz won his first two contests before losing a 16-1 decision to Jason Throne of St. Cloud State University in the final. Schmitz began the tournament by sticking Lance Fretwell of Concordia College to the mat in 2:15 and Augustus Donovon of St. Cloud State University in 1:23.

Finishing third for the Titans were Elijah Sanchez at 133 pounds and Matt Hanke at 285. Sanchez posted a 3-1 record and won his third-place match with a pin of Tristian Lang from Ridgewater College (Minn.) in 1:23. Hanke calculated a 2-1 record and captured his third-place bout with an 8-2 victory over UW-Oshkosh teammate Guyon Cyprian.

UW-Oshkosh wrestlers placing fourth were AJ Schoenfuss at 141 pounds, Gage Coppock at 174, Bryant Schaaf at 184 and Cyprian at 285.

The Titans also had Andrew Schad at 133 pounds, Michael Volkmar at 174 and Griffin King at 285 pounds all finish sixth.

UW-Oshkosh (11-1, 2-1 WIAC), ranked 10th nationally, wrestles at seventh-ranked and five-time defending WIAC champion UW-La Crosse (6-2, 0-1) on Friday (Jan. 28).
