Titans Successful In Their Long-Awaited Return To Activity

UW-Oshkosh wrestling's return to competitive activity after nearly a 12-month hiatus was a successful one as the Titans rallied to defeat UW-Platteville, 23-15, on Tuesday (Feb. 2) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh, which last competed Feb. 29 at the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional, trailed the Pioneers, 15-11, before acquiring wins from Husam Alabed, Beau Yineman and Jordan Lemcke in the contest's final three bouts.

Alabed began UW-Oshkosh's comeback and pulled the Titans within a 15-14 deficit with his narrow 10-9 victory over the Pioneers' Jacob Sklenar at 184 pounds.

Yineman, who sat out the 2020 season after posting a 32-6 record in 2019, then destroyed UW-Platteville's Brett Schoenherr, 18-3 (technical fall, 6:11), at 197 pounds to put the Titans ahead for good at 19-15.

Lemcke secured UW-Oshkosh's victory in the final bout with his 10-0 win over the Pioneers' Cole Knier at 285 pounds. Lemcke compiled a 22-7 record in 2020 and received Division III All-America Second Team honors following the cancelation of last year's national tournament due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

UW-Oshkosh (1-0, 1-0 WIAC) took an early 6-0 lead over UW-Platteville (0-1, 0-1) on a forfeit given to Luc Valdez at 125 pounds.

UW-Platteville then evened the score on wins of 6-5 from Isaac Wiegel over AJ Schoenfuss at 133 pounds and 8-1 from Luke Pradel over Cade Schmitz at 141.

The Titans regained the lead at 11-6 in the next bout as Wesam Alabed crushed Garrett Ruckdashel, 17-0 (technical fall, 4:32), at 149 pounds.

UW-Platteville answered back with wins in the next three bouts to take a 15-11 advantage. The Pioneers built their string of victories on wins of 14-11 from Gannon Hughes over Nate Stokhaug at 157 pounds, 3-1 from Nathan Wynsma over Preston Morgan at 165 and 10-7 from Nick Dado over Josh Te Stroete at 174.

The Titans have won two of their last three meetings with UW-Platteville after suffering four straight defeats to the Pioneers.

UW-Oshkosh also won three of nine contests outside of the dual meet, including Brandon Lenczner's pin of UW-Platteville's Andrew Steinhardt in 1:35 at 149 pounds. The Titans also received a 3-1 victory from Kobe Allen over Brad Ruger at 141 pounds and a 4-1 win from Keagan Lazar over Caden Fry at 157.

UW-Oshkosh hosts four-time defending WIAC champion UW-La Crosse next Tuesday (Feb. 9) in Kolf Sports Center.
