Titans Travel To Minnesota For NCAA Wrestling Regional

Admittance to the NCAA Division III Championship will be up for grabs when wrestlers from UW-Oshkosh and 16 other programs compete at the Upper Midwest Regional this weekend in Minneapolis, Minn.

Activity in the two-day tournament begins at 11 a.m. Friday (Feb. 28) and 10 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 29) from Augsburg University's Si Melby Hall.

Joining UW-Oshkosh's 10-member contingent at the regional will be wrestlers from Augsburg University, Concordia College (Minn.), Concordia University Wisconsin, Elmhurst College (Ill.), Lakeland University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Pacific University (Ore.), Saint John's University (Minn.), St. Olaf College (Minn.), University of Chicago (Ill.), UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater and Wheaton College (Ill.).

Defending national champion Augsburg University enters the regional ranked third in the country by the National Wrestling Coaches Association while UW-La Crosse lists 13th, UW-Whitewater 15th, UW-Platteville 22nd and UW-Eau Claire 24th.

This year's Upper Midwest Regional features 19 wrestlers ranked nationally by the NWCA, including top-ranked Grant Zamin from UW-La Crosse at 157 pounds and Tannar Vassar from Augsburg University at 184.

A total of 30 wrestlers, the top three finishers in each weight class, will qualify from the Upper Midwest Regional to the NCAA Division III Championship on March 13-14 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Five other regional tournaments will be held this weekend, including the Central Regional at Adrian College (Mich.), the Lower Midwest Regional at Loras College (Iowa), the Northeast Regional at Rhode Island College, the Mideast Regional at Ithaca College (N.Y.) and Southeast Regional at Messiah College (Pa.).

Augsburg University won last year's Upper Midwest Regional with 191 points. The Auggies were followed by second-place UW-La Crosse with 151 points, third-place UW-Whitewater with 146, fourth-place UW-Stevens Point with 985, fifth-place University of Chicago with 90 and sixth-place UW-Oshkosh with 81. The Titans finished ninth at the 2018 regional with 53.5 points.
