Titan Gymnastics Team Honored by Wisconsin Assembly

MADISON, Wis.- The National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) champion UW-Oshkosh women's gymnastics team was recognized by members of the Wisconsin State Assembly on Tuesday (April 25) at the Capitol building in Madison.

Representative Lori Palmeri, who represents Wisconsin's 54th District and serves as Mayor of Oshkosh, met with the Titans along with representative Michael Schraa and senator Dan Feyen before Palmeri helped present a proclamation from the Wisconsin Legislature to the team on the Senate floor.

25 members of the UW-Oshkosh team, along with coaches Lauren Karnitz and Wendy Carey, Assistant Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator Abby Gildernick and Chancellor Andrew Leavitt were in attendance.

As one of six teams competing, UW-Oshkosh won its sixth national championship (fourth NCGA title) and second consecutive title at Winona State University (Minn.) on March 25, scoring 192.525 points.

Head coach Lauren Karnitz guided the team to a 5-1 conference dual record during the regular season. UW-Oshkosh advanced to the NCGA Championship by winning the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Region with a championship record 193.100 points.

Sophomore Delaney Cienkus won the balance beam with a score of 9.825 that tied the program record and junior Emily Buffington won the all-around with a program record 38.725 combined points. Nine more Titans earned All-WIAC honors at the meet. Freshman Reanna McGibboney was named the Kwik Trip Newcomer of the Year and graduate student Rahdea Jarvis was named the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete.

At Winona, five gymnasts earned All-America honors, led by McGibboney with third and fifth place finishes on the floor exercise and vault, respectively. Sophomore Mia Lucero earned All-America on the vault, freshman Lydia Hayden placed on the balance beam, senior Trinity Sawyer earned her third career All-America on the uneven bars and Buffington earned her second in the all-around.

Members of the UW-Oshkosh gymnastics team will also be recognized at the professional baseball game in Milwaukee between the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates on August 4 with Karnitz set to throw out a first pitch.
