Buffington Selected As WIAC Gymnast Of The Week

UW-Oshkosh sophomore Emily Buffington was named one of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's two Kwik Trip Women's Gymnastics Athlete of the Week award winners for meets held Jan. 10-16.

Buffington, who was selected as the league's top all-around performer, had a big season-opening meet at a triangular hosted by Hamline University (Minn.) on Jan. 14.

Buffington won the all-around competition with a score of 37.85 while finishing first on the uneven bars and vault with marks of 9.70 and 9.60, respectively. All three scores recorded by Buffington were career bests.

Buffington also placed second on the balance beam with a figure of 9.30 and seventh in the floor exercise with a grade of 9.25.

UW-Oshkosh, the reigning WIAC champion, compiled a winning score of 185.650 to register its highest season-opening result in program history. Winona State University (Minn.) finished second and Hamline University third in the team standings with scores of 178.750 and 174.775, respectively.

Emma Grant of UW-La Crosse was chosen as the conference's top specialist for the week.
