Golfers Capture Third Straight Titan Fall Classic Title

The UW-Oshkosh women's golf team opened its 2021-22 season by repeating as champion of the Titan Fall Classic held Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 4-5) at the Oshkosh Country Club.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 674 strokes (90-over-par) during the 36-hole tournament to follow its own first-place finishes at the event in 2018 and 2019. The 2020 Titan Fall Classic was canceled due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

The Titans, who had their golfers count 333 strokes on Saturday and 341 on Sunday, finished 14 strokes better than UW-La Crosse's second-place amount of 688 (104-over-par). The Eagles trailed UW-Oshkosh by just six strokes after Saturday's competition.

UW-Eau Claire finished third in the 15-team field with 694 strokes while 2017 Titan Fall Classic champion UW-Stout placed fourth with 695, UW-River Falls fifth with 709 and UW-Stevens Point sixth with 744.

Rounding out the team listings were seventh-place UW-La Crosse (B) with 752 strokes, eighth-place UW-Oshkosh (B) with 759, ninth-place UW-Superior with 780, 10th-place St. Norbert College and UW-Eau Claire (B) with 784, 12th-place Marian University with 821, 13th-place St. Norbert College (B) with 856, 14th-place Edgewood College with 886 and 15th-place Lakeland University with 1,016.

UW-Oshkosh was led by the second-place individual finishes of both Erika Priebe and Margherite Pettenuzzo and the sixth-place listing of Megan Footit.

Priebe, who won the 2019 Titan Fall Classic after finishing fourth in 2018, accumulated 82 strokes on Saturday and 84 on Sunday to conclude this year's tournament with 166 strokes (20-over-par). Priebe had 13 pars and was one of four golfers owning a tournament-best four birdies.

Pettenuzzo reached her overall stroke count of 166 by adding up 79 strokes from Saturday and 87 from Sunday. Pettenuzzo, who led all golfers after Saturday's competition, finished sixth at the Titan Fall Classic in both 2018 and 2019. She was one of two golfers recording a tournament-best 20 pars at this year's event.

Footit earned her finish by totaling 168 strokes (22-over-par). She reached the score by attempting 86 shots on Saturday and 82 on Sunday. Footit, who had a tournament-best four birdies to go along with her 11 pars, placed 12th at the 2019 Titan Fall Classic.

UW-Oshkosh also had Josie Hofer finish 16th with 176 strokes, Ava Downie 17th with 178, Lauryn Davis 25th with 182, Kaylee Sadowski 37th with 192, Gwyn Golembiewski 39th with 194, Alyssa Dreher 44th with 197 and Mackenzie Retzlaff 74th with 232. Downie recorded three birdies in the tournament while Hofer, Sadowski, Golembiewski, Dreher and Retzlaff were members of the Titans' (B) team. 

Sydney Hufnagle of UW-River Falls captured this year's individual title with 158 strokes (12-over-par). She led all 82 golfers with her 77 strokes on Sunday. 

UW-Stout had a pair of top-five individual finishers as Abbey Filipiak shared second place with 166 strokes while Sydney Grimm ranked fifth with 167.

The second-place tie between UW-Stout's Filipiak and UW-Oshkosh's Pettenuzzo and Priebe was broken for the awards presentation and the outcome had Filipiak finishing second, Priebe third and Pettenuzzo fourth.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Onalaska for 18-hole competitions at the UW-La Crosse Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 11) and the Viterbo University Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 12).
