Titans Finish Second At WIAC Championship

Kayla Priebe finished third and both Micayla Richards and Laura Stair fifth as defending champion UW-Oshkosh placed second at the WIAC Women's Golf Championship held Friday through Sunday (Oct. 7-9) at the Reedsburg Country Club in Reedsburg.

UW-Oshkosh concluded Saturday's competition with a five-stroke lead over second-place UW-Stout, but the Blue Devils outscored the Titans by 10 strokes on Sunday to capture their second WIAC title in three years and third overall. UW-Stout will now represent the WIAC at the NCAA Division III Championship on May 9-12, 2017, in Houston, Texas.

UW-Stout compiled daily 18-hole scores of 340 on Friday, 322 on Saturday and 318 on Sunday to finish the event with 980 strokes (116-over-par). The Blue Devils also won WIAC titles in 2012 and 2014.

UW-Oshkosh, a four-time WIAC champion, ended play with 985 strokes. The Titans tallied daily scores of 337 on Friday, 320 on Saturday and 328 on Sunday.

UW-Whitewater finished third in the seven-team meet with 1,005 strokes, while UW-Eau Claire place fourth with 1,033, UW-Platteville fifth with 1,061, UW-River Falls sixth with 1,102 and UW-Stevens Point seventh with 1,114. UW-Whitewater led second-place UW-Oshkosh by two strokes and third-place UW-Stout by five strokes after Friday's competition.

UW-Whitewater's Ashley Hofmeister took first place among the 47 golfers with 238 strokes (22-over-par), while UW-Stout's Rachel Hernandez finished a close second with 239. Hofmeister had 30 pars and Hernandez six birdies to lead all players.

UW-Oshkosh's Priebe placed third in the individual competition with 242 strokes. Aided by four birdies and 25 pars she recorded daily scores of 84 on Friday, 80 on Saturday and 78 on Sunday.

Richards and Stair shared fifth place for the Titans with 248 strokes. Richards benefited from five birdies and 22 pars to post daily scores of 85 on Friday, 79 on Saturday and 84 on Sunday. Stair used 27 pars to mark daily results of 83 on Friday, 79 on Saturday and 86 on Sunday.

UW-Stout's Madison McCambridge finished fourth with 246 strokes.

UW-Oshkosh also had Hannah Braun place seventh with 249 strokes, Dianna Scheibe 13th with 255, Hanna Rebholz 19th with 261, Ireland Dunne 38th with 285 and Amanda Pederson 46th with 307. Braun had the lone eagle in the tournament with Sunday's score (three) on the par-five, 489-yard fourth hole.

At last year's league championship, Priebe finished second to teammate McKenzie Paul while Stair placed fifth, Richards 13th, Dunne 21st and Pederson 27th. Stair also finished 17th at the 2014 championship.

UW-Stout's Howie Samb was selected the WIAC Coach of the Year for the sixth time in eight years. UW-Eau Claire's Kaitlyn Moore and UW-Whitewater's Stephanie Stair were named co-recipients of the WIAC's Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.

UW-Oshkosh's next competition will be in April.
