Titans Upset No. 5/6 Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis.- Nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's basketball defeated No. 5/6 UW-Whitewater on Wednesday night (Jan. 31) with a final score of 57-46 on the road.

The Titans are now 1-1 against the Warhawks this season and won in Kachel Gymnasium for the first time since a 73-68 overtime win on Feb. 10, 2021.

Kennedy Osterman (Sr. • Pewaukee) led the Titans with 14 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Bridget Froehlke (Jr. • Wrightstown) followed with 13 points and four rebounds. Kayce Vaile (Sr. • Greendale) also collected seven rebounds with 11 points.

Oshkosh (16-4, 7-2 WIAC) shot 27.8 percent (five-of-18) from three and 80 percent (20-of-25) from the line and led the Warhawks (18-2, 7-2 WIAC) with a 35.6 percent (16-of-45) clip from the field compared to Whitewater's 31.5 percent (17-of-54).

Whitewater went on a five point run early in the fourth to secure an early lead. A layup from Vaile and Sarah Hardwick (So. • Fond du Lac) added the Titans to the board. From 6:50 to 4:08, the game was scoreless until a free throw from Mackenzie Tlachac (Sr. • Kewaunee) tied the game. Whitewater responded with a three-pointer from Lunden Alexander for a three-point lead and Tlachac scored a jump shot to bring the deficit back to one point. The Titans gained a two-point lead with three free throws from Osterman before a layup from Katie Hildebrandt tied the game at 10. Oshkosh ended the quarter with a three-pointer and jump shot from Allison Forney (Sr. • Batavia, Ill.) and Osterman for a five-point lead.

The second quarter started with a jump shot from Whitewater to shorten the lead to three points before Vaile responded with a layup to bring it back to a five point lead. Whitewater scored with a three-pointer from Hildebrandt before Froehlke responded with her own three-pointer. Whitewater converted two more three-point attempts but were still trailing the Titans by one. Two free throws secured Whitewater a one-point lead until Vaile scored a layup to take the lead back. Whitewater gained the lead back with two free throws and a three-pointer to close out the second.

A three-pointer from Froehlke and layup from Hardwick switched the lead back in the Titans' favor at the start of the third quarter. Whitewater came back with a three-point shot to capture the lead. Kate Huml (So. • Janesville) tied the game for the Titans with two free throws before the Warhawks made a layup and took a two-point lead. The teams traded points for the remainder of the third with Whitewater having a five-point lead before two free throws from Osterman minimized the gap.

Whitewater started the fourth quarter off with a layup to take a five-point lead and the teams traded points with the Warhawks reminding in the lead until the Titans scored the final 16 points of the contest to secure the win.

The Titans will return home to face UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Feb. 3) for senior day. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Kolf Sports Center.
