Blugolds End Titans' Five-Game Win Streak

EAU CLAIRE, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh women's basketball was defeated 61-52 by UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Jan. 24), ending its five-game winning streak.

The Titans (14-4, 5-2 WIAC) shot 25.4 percent (15-of-59) from the field and 88.9 percent (16-of-18) from the line. The Blugolds (10-8, 4-3 WIAC) shot 41.9 percent (18-of-43) from the field and 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from three to top Oshkosh. The Titans also outscored Eau Claire in points off turnovers (15-6), bench points (27-3), and fast break points (4-0).

Oshkosh was led by Mackenzie Tlachac (Sr. • Kewaunee), who scored 12 points and registered eight rebounds. Kayce Vaile (Sr. • Greendale) followed behind with 10 points and six rebounds for the Titans. Bridget Froehlke (Jr. • Wrightstown) had three assists and Olivia Argall (So. • Dodgeville) collected nine points.

Vaile started the game with two layups to secure the first four points for the Titans. Eau Claire scored its first two points off free throws followed by Oshkosh also scoring two free throws for a four-point lead. The Blugolds closed the score gap to just a point after a three-point basket from Anna Koth. Oshkosh continued its lead until the last two minutes of the opening quarter when Eau Claire tied up the score before a layup swapped the lead. Oshkosh closed the gap and tied the score with a layup from Kennedy Osterman (Sr. • Pewaukee) and with five seconds left in the first quarter, the Blugolds captured a two-point lead.

In the second quarter, Tlachac converted two free throw attempts to make it a one-point game before Eau Claire went on a nine-point spurt for a 22-12 lead. Oshkosh made up points with a free throw from Tlachac, a layup from Vaile, and a three pointer from Argall and in the final 30 seconds, Tlachac scored two points for the Titans.

Froehlke started the third quarter off with a three-pointer before a layup from Eau Claire put the Titans back in a double-digit deficit. The teams continued to go back and forth with points until the Titans were able to shrink the deficit to three points.

The Titans and Blugolds traded points throughout the fourth quarter and no team scored more than five points consecutively. Oshkosh outscored Eau Claire 7-3 from 5:24 to 1:29, decreasing the deficit to just three points before the Blugolds scored eight of the final 10 points of the game.

Titans return home Saturday (Jan. 27) to face off against UW-Stout. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Kolf Sports Center.
