Titans Beat Dubuque On Opening Night

WHEATON, Ill.- The UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team won its first game of the season against the University of Dubuque (Iowa) in the Wheaton Beth Baker Classic on Friday (Nov. 10) at King Arena.

The 70-52 victory was the third consecutive season-opening win for the Titans and the eleventh in head coach Brad Fischer's 12 seasons at the helm.

This is the second time the two teams have faced each other in the programs' histories, the first was a 60-36 Titan win on Dec. 29, 2021.

The Titans routed the Spartans in field goal percentage (51.9-26.9), assists (20-6), points in the paint (36-20), and bench points (32-18).

Mallory Hoitink (Fr. • Hartford) scored 11 points for Oshkosh, going 5-for-10 from the field. She also added a team-high seven rebounds and two assists.

Sarah Hardwick (So. • Green Bay), Kennedy Osterman (Sr. • Pewaukee), and Kayce Vaile (Sr. • Greendale) also scored in double figures for the Titans with 11, 11, and 10 points, respectively.

Oshkosh won the jump ball and scored first after a jump shot from Kate Huml (So. • Janesville). They took the lead and didn't look back for the rest of the first quarter where they led 14-11 after eight minutes of play.

The Spartans stormed back and took their first and only lead of the game in the second quarter after a pair of free throws from Samantha McDonald put them up 22-21. The Titans went on a 9-3 run after that to take back the lead, 30-25 at halftime.

The game remained close early in the third quarter until Oshkosh went on a 11-2 run to pull away and take a 50-42 lead going into the final quarter.

Osterman hit a three-pointer with 31 seconds left, which turned into the Titans largest lead of the night at 70-52, securing the victory.

Oshkosh returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 11), facing host Wheaton College (Ill.) in the Wheaton Beth Baker Classic at 5 p.m.
