Titans Fall in WIAC Semifinals

WHITEWATER, Wis.—Despite double-digit performances from Ava Douglas and Jenna Jorgensen, the UW-Oshkosh Titans fell in the WIAC Semifinals to the UW-Whitewater Warhawks, 65-57.

Douglas led the Titans with 16 points on four-of-nine shooting and made eight-of-ten free throws. Jorgensen added 12 points for the Titans on four-of-eleven shooting, three 3-pointers, and added seven rebounds. Kayce Vaile led the Titans with 12 rebounds and added nine points in the contest. Kate Huml added nine points for the Titans.

The Titans went 35.8% from the field (19-of-53), made six 3-pointers, and shot 76.5% (13-of-17) from the free throw line. The Titans grabbed 32 rebounds, 10 assists, and eight steals in the contest.

The Titans (19-8) will wait to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament on February 27. Head coach Brad Fischer coached his 299th game for the Titans in tonight's contest. 

Game Summary

The Titans opened up the game with a pair of layup from Vaile and Douglas. A jump shot from Huml gave the Titans a seven point lead at 9-2 with 6:14 remaining in the first quarter. The Titans continued to shut the Warhawks down offensively as Jenna Jorgensen gave the Titans a  12-point lead at 14-2. The Warhawks went on a 7-0 run over the course of two minutes before Sarah Hardwick ended a three minute scoring drought for the Titans.

Kennedy Osterman answered an opening basket in the second quarter from the Warhawks as the Titans led 19-14 with 8:54 remaining to play. The Warhawks and Titans would be tied at 19 for three minutes before the Warhawks made a 3-pointer. Vaile ended the Titans scoring drought with a 3-pointer, on an assist from Hardwick, as the Titans trailed by five with 2:23 remaining. Hardwick beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer on an assist from Vaile.

Jorgensen opened scoring for the Titans in the third quarter, making a 3-pointer on an assist from Douglas. The Titans and Warhawks traded baskets back-and-forth before the Warhawks forced the Titans into a nearly four-minute scoring drought. Douglas ended the scoring drought with a layup as the Titans trailed by nine at 43-34 with 1:43 remaining in the game.

An old-fashioned 3-pointer play from Jorgensen started the fourth and final quarter of play for the Titans. Douglas made a pair of free throws to bring the Titans within four at 45-41. Huml made back-to-back shots with 6:12 remaining in the game. Douglas made a free throw to end a two minute scoring drought before Vaile made a layup with 2:10 remaining in the game. Douglas ended the game with back-to-back shots  as the Titans fell in the semifinal game of the WIAC championships.
