Titans Improve Win Streak to Three; Defeat Ripon 61-53

OSHKOSH, Wis.—Holding off a late comeback attempt by the Ripon Red Hawks, the (RV) UW-Oshkosh Titans posted a 61-53 victory to close out the 2022 BSN Winter Classic.

With the win, the Titans improve to 9-3 on the season and have won three consecutive games.   

Jenna Jorgensen led the Titans with 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the field and making all five free throw attempts. The second Titan in double figure scoring, Kayce Vaile recorded 12 points, was perfect from the free throw line, and led the Titans with eight rebounds.

The Titans went 23-of-55 from the field (41.8%) and were held to just five made 3-pointers. The Titans went 10-of-13 from the charity stripe and were outrebounded by four, tallying 32 rebounds. The Titans had 34 points in the paint, scoring 14 points off turnovers, and saw their bench contributed 20 points in the contest.

Jorgensen and Vaile were named to the All-Classic team.

Game Summary

Skyylar Brescia and the Red Hawks of Ripon struck first on a layup at the 7:02 mark of the first quarter. A pair of free throws by Vaile would be the first points of the evening for the Titans, tying the game at two with 5:57 remaining in the quarter. The Titans would outscore the Red Hawks nine to two in the final two-and-a-half minutes of the first quarter, taking a 13-8 lead.

Jorgensen extended the Titans lead to six at 15-9 on a jump start with 8:03 remaining in the second quarter. The Red Hawks were held without a basket until the 2:35 mark of the quarter, as the Red Hawks went five of seven from the charity stripe. Bridget Froehlke hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Ava Douglas for a 13-point lead for the Titans. The Red Hawks hit a 3-pointer with nine second remaining in the half to trim the Titans lead to ten at 28-18.

Vaile had four of the Titans six opening third quarter points as the Red Hawks made three consecutive baskets. A late run by the Red Hawks brought the game within three at 36-33 as Allison Forney answered with back-to-back layups for the Titans.

The Titans defense held strong, holding the Red Hawks without a basket for nearly four minutes. The Red Hawks would battle back to be within seven of the Titans as Jorgensen started an 8-2 run for Titans. With 1:25 remaining in game, the Red Hawks' Bella Opelt trimmed the Titans lead to seven at 57-50. With two trips to the free throw line in the final thirty seconds of the game, The Titans defense held off the Red Hawks of Ripon for their third consecutive win.

Next Time on the Court

The Titans return to conference action on January 4, hosting UW-Eau Claire. Action is set to tip-off inside Kolf Sports Center at 7 p.m.
