Oshkosh Defeats Wartburg; Vaile Records Career Night

EAU CLAIRE, Wis.—Kayce Vaile led the No. 22/18 UW-Oshkosh Titans with 24 points as the Titans went 2-0 at the Eau Claire Tip-Off Tourney, defeating the Knights of Wartburg College 71-58.

Game Recap

The Titans and Knights kept the game close as the largest early lead would be four points with the Knights leading after back-to-back 3-pointers. Allison Forney collected a defensive rebound and hit a 3-pointer to bring the Titans within one at 7-8 at the 6:54 mark. A pair of free throws by Ava Douglas saw the Titans take a temporary lead before giving the Titans an 11-10 lead with a layup. The Titans would not trail after Douglas' basket at the 5:54 mark in the first quarter. Off an offensive board, Vaile gave the Titans a nine-point lead (23-14) the largest lead of the quarter for the Titans. The Titans held the Knights to nine second quarter points, outscoring them by five points to take a 40-30 lead at the break.

Sarah Hardwick extended the Titans lead to 12 at 9:10 in the third quarter, giving the Titans the first bucket of the second half. The Titans went on a 13-0 run over three minutes, taking a 57-34 lead over the Knights. A pair of free throws from Jenna Jorgensen gave the Titans a 20-point edge with 2:57 remaining in the third quarter.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Knights cut into the Titans lead on a back-to-back 3-pointers before Forney responded with a jump shot to slow the Knights offense down. Jorgensen hit the final basket of the night for the Titans at 3:39 as the Titans improved to 3-0 on the season. 

Titan Leaders

Vaile was 11-of-16 from the field, including a basket from beyond the arc, and added nine rebounds in a career-night for the junior from Greendale.

Forney and Jorgensen added 11 points each for the Titans offense, that went 48.3% from the field as a team.

Hardwick led the Titans with 11 rebounds and nearly recorded a double-double with nine points.

The Titans recorded 39 rebounds, outrebounding the Knights by 18 rebounds. From the free throw line, the Titans went 7-of-9.

The Titans open the 2022-23 season at home on Nov. 15, hosting Edgewood College. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. inside Kolf Sports Center.
