Titans Round Up Pointers For 15th Straight Home Win

Jaden Kolinski paced all players with a career-high 14 points in 16 minutes off the bench as the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team cruised to a 65-55 victory over UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (Feb. 9) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh never trailed Wednesday, building leads of 24-10 after one quarter, 36-16 at halftime and 55-31 with less than three minutes remaining during the third period en route to earning its seventh straight in win over UW-Stevens Point and 14th during the last 15 meetings in the series.

The Titans, who secured their 15th consecutive home win, improved their record to 16-5 overall and 5-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while UW-Stevens Point falls to 10-9, including a 3-7 mark in league play.

Kolinski shot 4-for-6 from the floor, 2-for-4 from 3-point range and 4-for-4 at the free throw line in her seventh game of the season. Kolinski went into Wednesday with one point in 34 minutes played on the year.

UW-Oshkosh featured 10 scorers as Nikki Arneson finished with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals in 17 minutes during her return to the starting lineup following an injury.

Jenna Jorgensen chipped in eight points and five rebounds in a reserve role for the Titans, who also received seven points and three assists from Julia Silloway, six points apiece from Allison Forney and Julia Magnuson, five points from Abby Kaiser and four from Kennedy Osterman.

Magnuson's point total on 2-for-3 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc established a career best. Osterman, who recorded a pair of steals, tied for the team lead with six rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh, which went 10 of 15 from the floor during the first quarter, finished the game shooting 44.4% (25-54) from the field, 33.3% (8-24) from 3-point range and 75% (9-12) at the foul line. The Titans held edges of 10-15 in turnovers and 7-3 in steals after entering the night leading the NCAA Division III in turnovers per game (10.7) and ranking 10th nationally by limiting opponents to 48.6 points per contest. UW-Oshkosh has now committed 10 or fewer turnovers in five straight games and on 11 occasions this season.

UW-Oshkosh 10th-year head coach Brad Fischer moved into ninth on the WIAC women's basketball wins list, upping his career record to 210-54 to surpass UW-La Crosse's Lois Heeren, who compiled a 209-225 mark from 2000-16.

Fischer, who was an assistant under Heeren at his alma mater UW-La Crosse from 2003-06, has guided UW-Oshkosh to at least 20 wins each of the past eight full seasons. Since his debut on the Titans sideline in 2013, Fischer has led the program to three WIAC regular season championships, six league tournament titles and six trips to the Division III Championship. Fischer and the Titans, who have reached the WIAC Tournament title game for an unprecedented eight consecutive years, have advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 four times and played in the second round of the national postseason on two other occasions.

UW-Stevens Point shot 19 of 55 (.345) from the field Wednesday, 6-for-19 (.316) from beyond the 3-point arc and 11 of 12 (.917) at the free throw line. The Pointers had advantages of 38-30 in rebounds, 12-11 in assists and 7-6 in blocks.

Taylor Greenheck led the Pointers with 10 points while Abbie Campion added nine points off the bench, and Gabby Gawlitta had seven points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds and two blocks.

UW-Oshkosh put the game away early, jumping out to a 9-2 lead before going on a 13-4 run to close out the first quarter over the last five minutes. Arneson paced the Titans during the opening period with seven points, three rebounds and a pair of steals before playing just eight minutes the remainder of the night.

The Titans then upped their scoring run to 21-6 spanning the first two quarters, holding the Pointers scoreless during the final 52 seconds of the first period and until the 4:21 mark of the second to extend their lead to 32-10. UW-Stevens Point did not make a field goal, missing eight straight attempts from the floor and committing eight turnovers during that stretch of time.

UW-Oshkosh went on to own its largest lead of 24 points at 55-31 following a Jorgensen 3-pointer with 2:26 to play in the third period.

The first matchup this season between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point – originally scheduled for Jan. 12 in Stevens Point – was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
