Big First Quarter Leads To Titans' Rout Of Eagles

Nikki Arneson scored a season high 22 points to lead the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team to a 78-46 victory over Edgewood College on Wednesday (Nov. 17) in Madison.

UW-Oshkosh (4-1), ranked 17th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, scored the first eight points of the game and shot 63% (17-29) from the field during the first half en route to snapping Edgewood College's 12-game home winning streak that dated back to the 2019-20 season.

The Titans owned leads of 27-9 after the first quarter, 45-20 at halftime and 62-34 entering the final period on the way to earning their sixth straight victory over Edgewood College. UW-Oshkosh ousted the Eagles from the 2020 Division III Championship with a 61-40 win in the first round during their most recent prior meeting.

Arneson shot 7-for-9 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, and 5-for-5 at the free throw line to surpass her previous season best of 16 points during a UW-Oshkosh win at Finlandia University (Mich.) in the regular season opener Nov. 5. Arneson also collected four rebounds and tied for the team lead with three assists.

Leah Porath added 14 points and eight rebounds for UW-Oshkosh, which also received a career high tying 10 points and three assists from Ava Douglas, and eight points from Jenna Jorgensen. UW-Oshkosh's Abby Kaiser chipped in four points, eight rebounds, three assists and a team best three steals.

UW-Oshkosh finished the game shooting 46.6% (27-58) from the floor, 30.4% (7-23) from beyond the 3-point arc and 70.8% (17-24) at the foul line while producing advantages of 44-23 in rebounds, 14-3 in offensive boards, 16-9 in assists, 13-16 in turnovers and 10-6 in steals.

Edgewood College (0-3) went 18 of 47 (.383) from the field, 2-for-17 (.182) from 3-point range and 8-for-17 (.471) at the free throw line. The Eagles had a 2-1 edge in blocks.

Emma Klein paced Edgewood College with 12 points. Vivian Guerrero contributed nine points and a team leading seven rebounds for the Eagles.

Porath's jumper with 9:25 left in the first quarter gave the Titans the only lead they required. Porath added another jumper before Arneson and Kaiser made layups that provided UW-Oshkosh an 8-0 advantage at the 7:38 mark of the first quarter. The Titans then extended their lead to 20-5 following a Douglas 3-pointer as UW-Oshkosh outshot the Eagles, 73.3% (11-15) to 30.8% (4-13), over the first 10 minutes.

UW-Oshkosh maintained a cushion of at least 20 points after Kayce Vaile hit a free throw for a 36-16 advantage with 2:36 left in the second quarter. The Titans owned their largest lead of 33 points at 78-45 after a pair of Allison Forney free throws at the 1:19 mark of the fourth period.

The Titans, who have won their last two games by an average of 41.5 points, return home to host Alma College (Mich.) on Friday (Nov. 19) at the UW-Oshkosh Classic in Kolf Sports Center.
