Titans Have Little Trouble With Cougars

Nikki Arneson had a game high 15 points and Kayce Vaile recorded her first career double-double as the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team scored the first 19 points of the game en route to an 82-31 victory over University of Minnesota Morris at the College of Saint Benedict Tipoff Tournament Saturday (Nov. 13) in St. Joseph, Minn.

UW-Oshkosh (3-1), ranked 17th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, featured 11 scorers among the 15 Titans who saw at least two minutes of playing time.

The Titans, playing University of Minnesota Morris for the first time, owned leads to 23-3 after the first quarter, 45-18 at halftime and 63-24 entering the final period.

Arneson shot 6-for-8 from the field and grabbed four rebounds in just 16 minutes of action while Vaile had a career best 12 points and 14 rebounds in 18 minutes.

Rounding out UW-Oshkosh's top scorers were Leah Porath and Kennedy Osterman with 10 points apiece, Mackenzie Tlachac with eight, Jenna Jorgensen seven, Ava Douglas six, and Abby Kaiser five.

Tlachac established a new career scoring high by going 4-for-4 from the floor in five minutes off the Titans bench. Douglas dished out a game best four assists while Osterman added three assists to go along with four rebounds.

Porath, who was named to the all-tournament team, has now scored in double figures 46 times in UW-Oshkosh's last 49 games. She also tallied six rebounds and a pair of steals Saturday.

UW-Oshkosh shot 47.7% (31-65) from the floor, 25% (4-16) from 3-point range and 76.2% (16-21) at the free throw line. The Titans held considerable advantages of 50-24 in rebounds, 17-6 in assists, 7-17 in turnovers and 10-5 in steals.

The Cougars were held to 13 of 51 (.255) shooting from the field, including 3-for-17 (.176) from beyond the 3-point arc, while going 2-for-2 at the foul line and owning a 7-3 edge in blocks.

Haley Wollschlager paced Upper Midwest Athletic Conference member University of Minnesota Morris (1-2) with 11 points.

The Titans put the game away early, scoring the first 19 points until University of Minnesota Morris broke up the shutout at the 1:49 mark of the first quarter. The game opening run of more than eight minutes began with 10 combined points from Arneson and Douglas ahead of a Porath layup, a Kaiser free throw and four Vaile free throws before two Brooke Freitag free throws provided the Titans with a 19-0 lead with 2:04 left in the first period.

The Cougars missed 11 consecutive field goal attempts and committed four turnovers during UW-Oshkosh's scoring run to start the contest.

UW-Oshkosh went on to lead by at least 22 points for the remainder of the game after Freitag's layup extended the Titans' advantage to 23-3 with 23 seconds left in the first quarter. The Titans owned their largest lead of 51 points when Jorgensen buried a jumper that created the final score with 13 seconds to play.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Madison for a nonconference game at Edgewood College on Wednesday (Nov. 17).
