Titans Secure WIAC East Division Title With Rout Of Pointers

The UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team clinched the outright title in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division after jumping out to a large early lead and cruising to a 67-40 win at UW-Stevens Point on Friday (Feb. 19).

UW-Oshkosh (5-1, 5-1 WIAC) went on a 24-1 scoring run for a 24-3 advantage early in the second quarter before going on to lead by double digits for the final 32:27 of the game. The Titans, who held UW-Stevens Point to 1-for-16 (6.3 percent) shooting from the field in the first 12:30 of the contest, owned leads of 22-3 after one quarter, 37-16 at intermission and 58-26 entering the final period.

The Titans, winners of six straight games against the Pointers and 13 of the last 14 meetings between the teams, earned the WIAC East Division's top seed for the league tournament that commences with quarterfinals March 1, when UW-Oshkosh will host UW-River Falls (1-5, 1-5 WIAC), the West Division's fourth-seeded team. The Titans are the two-time defending WIAC postseason champions.

Leading up to the WIAC Championship, UW-Oshkosh will play a two-game crossover series against West Division winner UW-Eau Claire (6-0, 6-0 WIAC). The Titans host the Blugolds in Kolf Sports Center on Wednesday (Feb. 24) before concluding the regular season at UW-Eau Claire on Feb. 26.

All 18 Titans in uniform played at least two minutes for the second straight game against the Pointers. UW-Oshkosh, which downed UW-Stevens Point at home by a 75-45 score Wednesday (Feb. 17), featured 13 scorers Friday as each Titan produced at least a point, a rebound or an assist.

Nikki Arneson led UW-Oshkosh with 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, in 18 minutes played.

Julia Silloway, who also went 3-for-4 from beyond the 3-point arc, added nine point for the Titans, who also received eight points apiece from Jenna Jorgensen and Leah Porath, seven from Claire Staples, six from Karsyn Rueth and five from Allison Forney.

Porath and Staples tied for the team lead with four rebounds while Porath also recorded three assists. Silloway, Ava Douglas and Kenedy Van Zile each collected a team-best two steals. Jorgensen went 3-for-6 from the floor and remains the WIAC leader with a .588 field goal percentage.

UW-Oshkosh finished the contest shooting 49.1 percent (26-53) from the field, 37 percent (10-27) from beyond the 3-point arc and 50 percent (5-10) at the free throw line. The Titans owned advantages of 34-30 in rebounds, 15-8 in assists, 15-18 in turnovers and 13-5 in steals. Both teams registered two blocks.

The Titans currently lead the WIAC in scoring defense (57.0), assists (12.67) and steals (11.0) per game, made 3-pointers (48) and average turnover margin (+6.5).

Taylor Greenheck paced the Pointers with nine points while Sierra Raine chipped in eight points and a game-high five rebounds off the UW-Stevens Point bench.

UW-Stevens Point shot 11 of 45 (24.4 percent) from the field, 2-for-11 from 3-point range and 16 of 19 (84.2 percent) at the foul line.

UW-Oshkosh was held scoreless for more than three minutes before rattling off its 24-1 scoring run. Arneson provided the Titans their lone lead at 3-2 on a 3-pointer with 6:37 left in the first quarter. Six different Titans contributed points during the decisive run, including Arneson with eight, Jorgensen with five, Rueth with four, Silloway with three and Porath with two ahead of a Staples layup 10 seconds into the second period that stretched the UW-Oshkosh lead to 24-3.

UW-Stevens Point missed 12 consecutive field goal attempts and committed five turnovers during a span of more than 11 minutes until Bailee Collins cut the Pointers' deficit to 26-7 on a layup at the 7:27 mark of the second quarter.

The Titans built their largest lead at 58-26 following a Staples three-point play with two seconds to go in the third period. UW-Oshkosh concluded the third quarter shooting 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) from the floor overall and 4-for-6 (66.7 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc.

UW-Stevens Point (2-4, 2-4 WIAC), the East Division third seed at the upcoming league tournament, has not won a home game over UW-Oshkosh since a 54-47 decision Jan. 10, 2015.
