Titans Round Up Pointers

Leah Porath scored 20 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to lead UW-Oshkosh to a 75-45 win over UW-Stevens Point that clinched at least a share of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division women's basketball title in Kolf Sports Center on Wednesday (Feb. 17).

UW-Oshkosh (4-1, 4-1 WIAC) never trailed, racing out to leads of 9-2 in the first quarter and 29-10 during the second period. The Titans, who won their fifth straight game in the series with UW-Stevens Point (2-3, 2-3 WIAC) and 12th in the last 13 meetings, led by as many as 34 points in the fourth quarter before settling for their largest margin of victory versus the Pointers since an 85-42 decision Jan. 21, 1998, in Stevens Point.

The Titans remain one game in front of UW-Whitewater (3-2, 3-2 WIAC) atop the East Division standings. UW-Oshkosh swept the regular season series against UW-Whitewater to secure the division tiebreaker, winning by scores of 73-68 in overtime Feb. 10 in Whitewater and 69-51 Feb. 12 in Oshkosh.

Porath, the 2020 WIAC Player of the Year and D3hoops.com All-American, concluded Wednesday's game shooting 8-for-14 from the field on the way to recording her 37th double-digit scoring effort in the Titans' past 39 games.

All 18 Titans in uniform received playing time and 11 scored points, including Jenna Jorgensen, Abby Kaiser and Kayce Vaile with 10 each. Jorgensen, who entered the night with a WIAC-best .545 field goal percentage, went 5-for-6 from the floor. Vaile scored in double figures for the first time as a Titan, going 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 at the free throw line in six minutes.

Julia Silloway and Nikki Arneson chipped in eight and six points, respectively, for the Titans. Silloway, who ranked second in WIAC field goal percentage at .520 and first with a 3.20 assist-to-turnover ratio, went 2-for-4 from the field – all from 3-point range. UW-Oshkosh's Ava Douglas added career and game highs of six assists and three steals.

The Titans shot 47.3 percent (26-55) from the field, 20 percent (4-20) from beyond the 3-point arc and 63.3 percent (19-30) at the foul line. UW-Oshkosh, the 2021 WIAC season leader with 10.25 steal per game entering Wednesday and the 2020 NCAA Division III leader at 11.9 turnovers per contest, owned advantages of 13-10 in assists, 9-25 in turnovers, 12-3 in steals and 5-2 in blocks.

Taylor Greenheck led UW-Stevens Point with 11 points while Bailee Collins produced a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Pointers went 15 of 45 (33.3 percent) from the floor, 4-for-12 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range and 11 of 22 (50 percent) at the free throw line. UW-Stevens Point held a 39-29 rebounding edge.

UW-Oshkosh opened the scoring on consecutive layups from Kaiser and Silloway for a 4-0 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. A three-point play and a jumper from Porath on back-to-back possessions extended the Titans' advantage to 9-2 midway through the period, and Jorgensen's basket in the paint provided UW-Oshkosh a 17-7 cushion entering the second quarter.

UW-Oshkosh then put the game away with 12 unanswered points for a 29-10 lead early in the second period. Silloway sparked the decisive scoring run with a pair of 3-pointers ahead of two more three-point plays from Porath during a 50-second span.

The Titans increased their lead to 43-21 at intermission and 57-33 after three quarters. A Mackenzie Tlachac layup later gave UW-Oshkosh its largest lead of 34 points at 74-40 with 1:47 left in the game.

UW-Oshkosh's 75 points were its most against UW-Stevens Point since a 75-68 overtime home win over the Pointers on Jan. 15, 2014. The Titans had not reached 75 points in regulation versus UW-Stevens Point since falling, 91-77, in Stevens Point on Feb. 28, 2004.

The Titans, the two-time defending league postseason champions and 2020 Division III Sweet 16 participant, can clinch the outright WIAC East Division title with a victory at UW-Stevens Point on Friday (Feb. 19).
