Titans Cool Down Inferno

Taylor Schmidt led all players with 13 points as the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team produced another dominating defensive effort in a 65-21 victory over Alverno College on Saturday (Nov. 19) in Milwaukee.

UW-Oshkosh (3-0), ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, held Alverno College to 19.5 percent (8-41) shooting from the floor en route to matching the second-fewest points allowed in a game in program history. The Titans have outscored their opponents, 203-72, this season.

UW-Oshkosh held commanding advantages in field goal percentage (.424 to .195), rebounds (45-24), assists (14-6) and turnovers (20-11). The Titans shot 8-for-21 (38.1 percent) from 3-point range and 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) from the free throw line.

Schmidt made 4 of 8 shots from the field, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range, and 3 of 4 attempts from the free throw line.

All 17 Titans saw action for the third consecutive game. UW-Oshkosh had 14 players score points against Alverno College as the Titan reserves outscored the Inferno bench, 36-6.

Eliza Campbell tallied 10 points, six rebounds and a game-best three assists for the Titans, who also received seven points from Kylie Moe, six points apiece from Emma Melotik and Madeline Staples, and five points from Jaimee Pitt.

UW-Oshkosh's Isabella Samuels chipped in four points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Alverno College (0-3) scored on its opening possession and held a 4-1 advantage just over one minute into the contest. UW-Oshkosh then took the lead for good at 9-7 on a 3-pointer by Moe at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter.

Moe's long-range basket sparked a 20-1 scoring run during a nearly 10-minute stretch spanning the first two periods. The Inferno missed 10 consecutive shots from the floor and committed six turnovers during the Titans' decisive surge that featured six different scorers, including five points from Moe and four apiece from Campbell and Schmidt.

UW-Oshkosh extended its lead to 20-8 on a 3-pointer by Melotik and owned a 32-11 advantage at intermission after Samuels grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at the buzzer.

A 3-pointer by Kendell Truttman gave the Titans a 49-13 advantage with 1:50 to go in the third quarter, and Erin Vande Zande provided UW-Oshkosh with its largest lead of 44 points on a layup that capped the game's scoring.

Katelyn Bartlett and Gabby Hood paced the Inferno with five points apiece.

The UW-Oshkosh school record for points allowed in a game was established last season during a 67-19 victory over Mount Mary University. This season, the Titans have also won by scores of 69-28 over Edgewood College (Nov. 15) and 69-23 over Iowa Wesleyan University (Nov. 18).

UW-Oshkosh's 21 points allowed to Alverno College matched the Titans' 37-21 triumph over UW-Stevens Point in the semifinal round of last year's WIAC Championship.

The Titans are off until conducting their home opener against St. Norbert College on Nov. 29.
