Titans Maintain Share Of WIAC Lead

Eliza Campbell scored 11 of her team-leading 13 points in the second quarter as the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team never trailed and cruised to a 57-44 victory over UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Feb. 13) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (19-4, 10-2 WIAC), ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, maintained its position atop the league standings with two games remaining.

The Titans, who limited their opponent to less than 60 points for the 18th time this season, created 24 UW-La Crosse turnovers, including 17 on steals.

UW-La Crosse (7-16, 1-11 WIAC), which was limited to its second lowest scoring output of the season, outshot UW-Oshkosh, 43.2 percent (16-37) to 35.3 percent (18-51), but the Titans held advantages in rebounds (32-29), assists (9-4), turnovers (24-16) and steals (17-9). The Eagles scored a season-low 38 points against the Titans on Jan. 13.

UW-Oshkosh, which entered the game ranked fifth in the nation by shooting .367 from 3-point range, made 5 of 14 shots (.357) from long range.

Campbell converted 6 of 13 attempts from the field, including 5 of 7 in the second period, and added three steals and two assists.

Eleven Titans scored points and 11 recorded steals. Ashley Neustifter registered seven points and three steals, while Alex Richard had seven points and a team-high five rebounds, Taylor Schmidt six points and three steals, and Morgan Kokta and Marissa Selner five points apiece.

UW-Oshkosh tallied the first eight points of the contest, including six by Schmidt, before UW-La Crosse got on the scoreboard at the 4:52 mark of the first quarter. The Titans extended their lead to 13-2 on a 3-pointer by Emma Melotik, and a layup by Isabella Samuels gave UW-Oshkosh a 15-6 after one period.

The Titans pushed their lead to 22-8, but the Eagles scored six unanswered points to trim their deficit to 22-14 on a layup by MaKenzie Miller with 5:56 remaining in the second stanza.

UW-Oshkosh responded with an eight-point surge for a 30-14 lead and went into intermission with a 33-17 advantage after Selner banked in her first career 3-pointer at the buzzer.

UW-La Crosse committed 15 turnovers while being held to just 16 shots in the first half. The Titans launched 32 shots in the opening half and turned the basketball over just four times.

UW-Oshkosh opened its largest lead of 23 points at 40-17 following a pair of free throws by Richard with 5:45 left in the third quarter, and the Titans led by at least 11 points for the final 22:40 of the contest.

Miller led all players with 15 points for the Eagles. She converted 6 of 11 shots from the field and added four rebounds and two blocks.

Rachel Atchison recorded 13 points and four steals for the Eagles, who also received six points and four rebounds from Elise DeNoyer and six points from Jenna Anderson.

UW-Oshkosh hosts 19th-ranked UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Feb. 17). The Titans downed the Warhawks, 79-66, on Jan. 20 in Whitewater.
