Titans Bounce Blue Devils With Big First Quarter

Eliza Campbell scored a season-best 20 points and Alex Richard added a double-double as the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team built a large early lead and never trailed during a 65-50 victory over UW-Stout on Saturday (Jan. 23) in Menomonie.

Campbell connected on 8 of 12 shots from the floor, including all four of her attempts from 3-point range. Her four 3-pointers established a new career high.

Richard tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career.

Emma Melotik added nine points in seven minutes of action off the UW-Oshkosh bench as the Titans defeated the Blue Devils for the seventh straight time and extended their season winning streak to five games.

UW-Oshkosh (14-3, 5-1 WIAC), ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, jumped out to a 23-7 lead after the first quarter before being outscored, 43-42, for the remainder of the contest.

The Titans overcame a season-high 24 turnovers by shooting 46.9 percent (23-49) from the floor, including 46.2 percent (6-13) from 3-point range. UW-Oshkosh entered the game ranked second in the country by averaging just 12.1 turnovers per contest.

UW-Oshkosh, which has won 51 of its last 53 games when holding opponents under 61 points, went 13-for-15 (86.7 percent) from the free throw line and held advantages in rebounds (41-32) and assists (13-8).

Campbell and Richard combined to score the Titans' first 11 points and both finished the opening quarter with seven apiece. A layup by Campbell sparked a 9-0 scoring run that provided the Titans with an 18-4 lead at the 3:01 mark of the first period.

A 3-pointer by Campbell capped a string of six consecutive successful field goals as the Titans extended their lead to 23-5 with 89 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Trailing 25-7, UW-Stout rattled off nine straight points to pull within 25-16 on a 3-pointer by Nicole Schaub with 5:12 remaining in the second quarter. The Titans responded with nine of the next 12 points to up their lead to 34-19 on a layup by Madeline Staples. UW-Stout's Jenna Goldsmith then drove for a layup to make the score 34-21 at intermission.

UW-Oshkosh shot 48.3 percent (14-29) from the field during the first half, while UW-Stout was held to just 29.6 percent (8-27).

The Titans maintained a double-digit lead for all but 51 seconds of the second half. UW-Stout's Kyncaide Diedrich made a pair of free throws to trim the Blue deficit to 41-32 with 2:26 left in the third quarter, but UW-Oshkosh answered with 11 straight points for a 52-32 advantage. Ashley Neustifter got the game-clinching run started with a layup and Campbell capped it off on a 3-pointer with 7:49 remaining.

UW-Oshkosh held its largest lead of 21 points at 57-36 on a 3-pointer by Morgan Kokta with 4:01 to play.

Kyleigh Hebert paced UW-Stout with 16 points, seven rebounds and a game-high three steals. She made 7 of 10 field goals, including 6 of 9 during the second half. Diedrich chipped in 12 points and four rebounds for the Blue Devils (8-9, 2-4 WIAC).

UW-Oshkosh returns home to face UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Jan. 23).
